Chapter 9 - Promises Under the Stars

A month after the boardroom victory, life at the Greenwich estate returned to a serene, beautiful rhythm.
The media storm had passed, leaving Derek Whitman’s reputation higher than ever as a brilliant CEO and a devoted father. Eleanor Vance had quietly retreated into social obscurity, her financial assets frozen, while Richard Sterling’s corporate empire was dismantled and absorbed into Whitman International.
It was an exquisite late August evening. The sky above the estate was a dark velvet blanket studded with a thousand glittering stars.
The boys were upstairs in their bedrooms, fast asleep after an energetic day of riding ponies at a local farm.
On the grand stone terrace overlooking the dark garden, a soft breeze rustled the leaves of the ancient oak trees. Candlelight flickered inside glass lanterns scattered across the terrace floor, casting a warm, romantic glow over the scene.
Clara stood near the balustrade, wearing a soft lavender silk dress, gazing up at the stars. She looked breathtaking, her dark hair cascading over her shoulders, her profile serene and peaceful.
Footsteps sounded behind her as Derek walked out onto the terrace, carrying two glasses of sparkling white wine.
"They're sound asleep," Derek said softly, handing her a glass. "Finn was hugging his wooden horse so tightly I couldn't even take it out of his arms."
Clara smiled, taking a sip of the wine. "He told me today that he wants to be a cowboy when he grows up."
"A cowboy, huh?" Derek chuckled, leaning against the balustrade beside her. "I suppose we’ll have to buy a ranch in Montana."
They stood in comfortable silence for a long moment, listening to the crickets chirping in the garden below.
"Clara," Derek spoke softly, his tone changing into something deep, meaningful, and intensely personal.
Clara turned to look at him, her heart skipping a beat as she saw the sheer depth of emotion burning in his dark eyes.
"One year ago, when I lost Lydia, I thought my life was over," Derek confessed, setting his glass down on the stone ledge. "I was living in a cold, dark house, watching my sons disappear into grief, feeling like a complete failure as a father."
He stepped closer to her, reaching out to gently cup her cheek with his warm palm.
"Then you walked into our lives," Derek whispered, his voice thick with emotion. "You didn't just bring my sons back to life, Clara. You brought me back to life. You showed me that love isn't something that dies with the past—it’s something that rebuilds the future."
Clara leaned her face into his warm palm, tears of pure happiness welling up in her eyes. "Derek..."
"I love you, Clara Winslow," Derek said, his voice trembling with unconditional devotion. "Not just because you saved my boys, but because you are the most incredible, brave, and loving woman I have ever known."
Derek reached into his coat pocket, pulling out a small velvet box. He knelt down on one knee on the stone terrace, opening the box to reveal a magnificent, ethically sourced cushion-cut diamond ring that caught the moonlight brilliantly.
"Clara," Derek said, looking up into her eyes with a breathtaking smile. "Will you do me the honor of becoming my wife? Will you make our family whole forever?"
Clara gasped, covering her mouth with her hands as happy tears spilled over her cheeks.
"Yes!" Clara cried out softly, kneeling down on the stone floor right beside him, wrapping her arms around his neck. "Yes, Derek! A thousand times yes!"
Derek pulled her close, wrapping his strong arms around her waist, and lifted her into his arms as he pressed his lips to hers in a deep, passionate kiss under the starry sky.
Above them, on the second-floor balcony, three small heads peered over the railing in their pajamas.
"She said yes!" Finn whispered loudly, pumping his tiny fist in the air.

"Hooray!" Eli and Jasper squealed in unison, clapping their hands wildly.
Derek and Clara pulled back, laughing joyfully as they looked up at the balcony, seeing their three little boys cheering for them under the moonlight.
