Chapter 3 - The Sanctuary of Iron and Glass

The question hung in the air like a blade hanging by a thread. Before Adrian could answer, the SUV turned off the main highway and passed through massive iron gates that opened automatically into a dense, snow-covered forest.

Vale Manor rose from the pines like a fortress of glass, black steel, and stone. Security lights flooded the winding driveway, and as the vehicle pulled up to the grand entrance, four staff members in formal attire and two medical professionals holding heated infant cradles were already waiting under the heated portico.

“Sir!” Dr. Evans, a sharp-eyed woman in her fifties, stepped forward as the doors opened. “Bring the infants inside immediately. The temperature drop outside is dangerous.”

Lila gasped and pulled Noah closer, growling softly like a cornered animal. “No! Don’t touch them!”

“Lila, listen to me,” Adrian said gently, holding up his hands to signal the staff to stand back. “Dr. Evans is a friend. She helped take care of your mother when we were young. They only want to check their breathing and keep them warm.”

Lila looked at the warm, golden light spilling from the open doors of the manor. She looked at her brothers, whose breathing was shallow and ragged. She swallowed hard, her small throat working against the dry ache of hunger.

“You promise they stay with me?” she demanded, looking Dr. Evans dead in the eye.

“I promise, little one,” Dr. Evans said, her voice dripping with maternal warmth. “You can stand right beside their beds the entire time.”

Reluctantly, Lila allowed the nurses to place Noah and Eli into the heated transport cradles. She followed them closely, her thin shoes squeaking against the polished marble of the grand foyer.

The manor was staggering in its luxury, yet it felt strikingly hollow. There were no family portraits on the walls, no festive holiday decorations, only high arching ceilings, priceless art, and an overwhelming silence that seemed to bow in reverence to Adrian’s return.

While the medical team set up in a private suite, examining the twins and administering pediatric fluids and specialized infant formula, Adrian stood by the window of the adjoining room. He watched Lila through the glass. She refused to sit on the plush velvet chairs, choosing instead to stand on a stool, watching every movement of the stethoscope with hawk-like intensity.

Marcus walked into the room, holding an encrypted tablet.

“Boss,” Marcus said in a low voice. “I ran the property records for the arson incident three weeks ago. The house was located in Millfield—a small, off-grid town forty miles south. The local sheriff ruled it an accidental electrical fire.”

“An electrical fire?” Adrian scoffed bitterly, his eyes fixed on Lila. “She told me the cellar doors were locked from the outside.”

“It gets worse,” Marcus continued, tapping the screen. “The land the house sat on was purchased six months ago by a holding company called Apex Horizons.”

Adrian turned his head sharply. “Apex? That’s a subsidiary owned by my uncle, Julian Vale.”

Marcus nodded grimly. “Julian has been attempting to liquidate several off-grid rural properties through that holding company. If Evelyn was hiding on one of those parcels... it’s possible she was discovered.”

Adrian’s fists clenched so hard his knuckles popped. Julian Vale was his father’s younger brother—a ruthless corporate raider who had spent the last decade trying to wrestle control of Vale Medical Systems away from Adrian. Eight years ago, Julian had tried to orchestrate a hostile takeover while Adrian was grieving Evelyn’s disappearance.

“He didn't just want the company,” Adrian whispered, the realization striking him like a physical blow. “Julian knew she was alive. He knew she was pregnant.”
