Chapter 8 - The Shadow of the Past

Despite the victory in court, the emotional wounds lingering within the Vale estate were deep and complex.
Lila was no longer starving, but the trauma of her early years didn't vanish overnight. She suffered from severe night terrors, waking up screaming about smoke and locked doors. She refused to sleep in her luxurious bedroom, choosing instead to drag her mattress into the nursery so she could sleep on the floor between Noah and Eli’s cribs.
Adrian realized that his wealth could buy medical care, top-tier security, and gourmet food, but it could not instantly heal a broken heart.
One rainy afternoon in May, Adrian walked into the nursery to find Lila sitting on the floor, staring out the window at the rain pouring over the gardens.
He sat down cross-legged beside her, placing a gentle hand on her back.
“You don't have to carry the world anymore, Lila,” Adrian said softly. “The bad men are gone. Your brothers are safe. You’re safe.”
Lila looked at him, her amber eyes filled with a tragic, ancient wisdom. “I miss her so much, Dad. Every time I close my eyes, I see her standing by the cellar chute, surrounded by smoke, telling me she loves me. I feel like... if I stop being scared, I’ll forget her.”
Adrian felt his own heart break anew. He reached out and pulled her into a warm, tight embrace.
“You will never forget her,” Adrian whispered, his tears soaking into her hair. “Because every time I look at you, I see her. When you protect your brothers, that’s your mother’s love living inside you. We don't have to move on from her, Lila. We move forward with her.”
He reached into his pocket and pulled out a velvet box. He opened it to reveal a beautiful, custom-crafted gold brooch shaped like a willow tree, encrusted with small emeralds that matched her eyes.
“I had this made from the gold thread of your mother’s coat,” Adrian said gently, pinning it over her heart. “So you can wear her love anywhere you go, without needing an oversized coat to protect you.”
Lila touched the cool, smooth gold of the brooch. She looked up at her father, her eyes shining, and for the first time since he had met her in register seven, a genuine, radiant smile broke across her face.

She wrapped her arms around his neck and buried her face in his shoulder. “I love you, Dad.”
“I love you, my sweet girl,” Adrian choked out, holding her close.
