Chapter 6 - The Web of Deceit

The next forty-eight hours were a hurricane of legal battles, law enforcement raids, and media frenzy.
The news broadcast of Lila confronting Julian Vale at the manor foyer had gone viral worldwide. The image of the little girl in the oversized coat accusing a powerful corporate billionaire of murder had sparked an international outcry.
The State Police, led by an uncorruptible lead investigator named Captain Reyes, took over the Millfield arson investigation from the local sheriff’s department.
In the command center set up in the manor’s library, Captain Reyes laid out several crime scene photos on the polished oak table. Adrian, Lila, and Marcus sat across from him.
“The local Millfield sheriff was on Julian Vale’s payroll,” Captain Reyes explained, tapping a document. “We found offshore accounts linked to him. The arson was intentional. Accelerants were used on the exterior doors to block all exits.”
Lila looked down at her small hands, her voice barely a whisper. “Mommy knew they were coming. A black car had been parked at the edge of the woods for three days. She packed a bag with our birth certificates and hid them in the hollow oak tree behind the church.”
Adrian looked at Captain Reyes. “Did you recover the bag?”
Reyes nodded, sliding a sealed evidence folder across the table. Inside were worn, plastic-wrapped documents: Lila’s original birth certificate, signed by a midwife in secret, listing Adrian Vale as the father, along with Evelyn’s personal journal.
Adrian reached out with trembling hands and opened the leather-bound book. The pages were filled with Evelyn’s neat, flowing handwriting.
“If anyone reads this,” the final entry read, “know that I did not run because I stopped loving Adrian. I ran because Julian Vale threatened to murder our unborn child. If I do not survive the winter, my only prayer is that my sweet Lila finds her way back to her father. Look for the coat, Adrian. It holds the key to everything.”
Adrian’s tears soaked the paper. “The key... what did she mean by the key?”
Lila stood up, walked to the chair where her mother’s coat hung, and reached into the heavy lining of the inner hem. She felt around until her fingers found a hard, thin metal object stitched into the padding.
“Mommy told me never to remove this unless I was safe,” Lila said.
With a pair of small scissors provided by Marcus, Adrian carefully snipped the stitches. Out slipped a small, metallic silver flash drive stamped with the Vale Medical crest.
Captain Reyes immediately plugged the drive into a secure laptop.
The screen lit up with hundreds of encrypted files, audio recordings, and bank ledgers detailing fifteen years of Julian Vale’s illegal activities—including hitman payouts, corporate sabotage, and the original wiretaps he had used to blackmail Evelyn eight years ago.

Evelyn hadn't just been hiding. For eight years, she had been meticulously building an ironclad case to destroy Julian Vale forever.
“This isn't just arson,” Captain Reyes breathed, staring at the screen in disbelief. “This is treason, murder, and corporate racketeering on a massive scale. Julian Vale is going away for the rest of his natural life.”
