Chapter 5 - The Wolf at the Gate

The grand foyer felt icy once again as the massive mahogany doors swung open.
Julian Vale stepped inside, shaking snow off his heavy mink-lined coat. He was fifty-eight, with silver hair slicked back, sharp grey eyes, and a predatory smile that had terrified boardrooms for thirty years. Behind him stood two men in black suits holding leather briefcases, flanked by a local news reporter holding a microphone.
“Adrian!” Julian announced loudly, his voice echoing off the marble walls. “My dear nephew! I came as soon as I heard the tragic rumors!”
Adrian stood at the bottom of the grand staircase, flanked by Marcus. His expression was a wall of cold stone.
“Get out of my house, Julian,” Adrian said quietly.
“Now, now, is that any way to speak to your uncle?” Julian chuckled, stepping further into the foyer. The news camera operator raised his rig, capturing every frame. “I heard a disturbing story tonight. Social media is buzzing with videos of you buying thousands of dollars of infant supplies for a dirty street urchin in a grocery store. Rumors are spreading that you’ve abducted a child.”
“I suggest you turn those cameras off before I have my security team dismantle them,” Adrian warned, his voice dangerously soft.
“We are acting in the interest of public safety!” the reporter piped up, sensing a sensational story. “Mr. Vale, is it true you brought an undocumented minor into this private residence?”
“She is not undocumented,” a small, sharp voice rang out from the top of the stairs.
Everyone looked up.
Lila stood at the landing of the grand staircase. She had removed the silk pajamas and put her mother’s oversized black coat back on over a simple white wool sweater. The gold embroidery on the lapel caught the chandelier light, shining bright and clear.
Julian’s laughter died in his throat. His eyes locked onto the coat, then shifted to Lila’s face. His face drained of color as if he had seen a phantom.
“Evelyn...” Julian gasped, taking a involuntary step back.
“My mother’s name was Evelyn Vale,” Lila said, stepping down the stairs one by one with a slow, deliberate grace that belied her eight years. “And I am Lila Vale. The daughter of Adrian Vale.”
The news reporter gasped, gesturing frantically to the camera operator to zoom in on the girl’s face.
Julian caught himself quickly, his sharp mind racing to regain control. “Absurd! Evelyn Vale died eight years ago! This is an imposter—a stunt cooked up by Adrian to manipulate the board of directors before next week’s annual shareholder vote!”
“Is it?” Adrian stepped forward, placing a protective hand on Lila’s shoulder as she reached the bottom of the stairs. “We ran a rapid DNA test two hours ago through Vale Medical’s private lab. The results are already registered with the state family court. She is my daughter, Julian. My legal, sole heir.”
Julian’s eyes narrowed into slit-like menace. He leaned closer, lowering his voice so the microphones couldn't catch it. “Even if she is yours, nephew... what about the arson in Millfield? The local authorities are searching for a runaway girl suspected of setting fire to a residential property. It would be a terrible shame if your long-lost daughter spent her reunion in a juvenile detention center.”
The sheer malice of the threat hung in the air. Julian was admitting, without saying the words, that he controlled the corrupt local authorities in Millfield.
Lila didn't flinch. She stepped in front of her father and looked up at Julian with eyes that burned like liquid gold.
“I didn't burn the house,” Lila said clearly, her voice echoing into the microphone held by the trembling reporter. “Your men did. The ones with the tattoo of a crow on their wrists. The ones who locked the cellar door while my mother was still inside.”
Julian’s jaw twitched.

“Turn off the camera,” Julian snapped, glaring at the news crew. “Turn it off now!”
“Keep recording!” Adrian commanded, his voice roaring like thunder. “Marcus, lock the gates. No one leaves this estate until the State Police arrive.”
