Chapter 5 - The Gala of Ravens

Two weeks passed like a golden dream.

Claire moved permanently into the master wing of Villa Vale. Under Dominic’s protective care, her bruises faded, her split lip healed, and the hollow, exhausted look in her eyes was replaced by a radiant glow.

Dominic spared no expense. He brought high-end fashion designers directly to the mansion, refusing the off-the-rack dresses that never fit her full hips or bust properly. He ordered custom-tailored silk gowns, velvet coats, and diamond jewelry designed specifically to complement her lush, beautiful curves.

Yet, despite her growing confidence within the walls of the estate, tonight was the ultimate test.

Tonight was the Annual Ravensport Charity Gala at the Grand Horizon Hotel—the biggest social event of the year, attended by politicians, high-society elites, and every syndicate boss on the eastern seaboard.

Claire stood before the full-length mirror in the master dressing room, her breath catching in her throat.

She wore a custom emerald-green velvet dress that hugged her waist, flared gracefully over her full hips, and dropped to the floor in rich, luxurious folds. The sweetheart neckline displayed her soft, alabaster shoulders, highlighted by a breathtaking teardrop emerald necklace that Dominic had given her that morning. Her dark hair was styled in elegant waves, and her lips were painted a bold, confident crimson.

For the first time in her life, she didn't look like a maid. She looked like royalty.

The door behind her opened, and Dominic walked in. He wore a crisp black tuxedo with an emerald-green silk pocket square matching her dress. He stopped in his tracks, his dark eyes sweeping over her from head to toe, a look of sheer, hungry admiration taking over his rugged face.

"My God, Claire," Dominic breathed, walking up behind her. He wrapped his arms around her waist, pulling her back against his broad chest, resting his chin on her shoulder as they looked at their reflection in the mirror. "You are going to blind everyone in that ballroom."

Claire smiled, resting her hands over his on her stomach. "I'm still nervous, Dominic. Don Moretti will be there. The city council members will be there. They remember me as the girl who cleared their wine glasses last year."

Dominic turned her around in his arms, his dark eyes locking onto hers with absolute conviction.

"Let them remember," Dominic said smoothly. "And tonight, they will learn that the girl who cleared their glasses now holds the keys to my city. Keep your head high, my queen. You walk beside the King tonight."

An hour later, the doors of the Grand Horizon Ballroom swung open.

The room was packed with hundreds of people in tuxedos and sparkling gowns. Glass chandeliers cast a warm light over silver trays, champagne fountains, and a live string orchestra.

A sudden hush fell over the room near the entrance.

Dominic Vale stepped into the ballroom, looking imposing, dangerous, and impossibly wealthy. But what caught everyone’s breath was the woman on his arm.

Claire walked beside him, her head held high, her spine straight, her emerald dress catching the light with every graceful step she took. She didn't cower. She didn't hide. She walked with the calm dignity of a woman who knew she was cherished.

Murmurs rippled through the crowd like wildfire.

"Who is that woman?" "Is that... isn't that Vale's former housemaid?" "Look at her size! Why is he with her?" "She's stunning... look at those diamonds!"

Dominic ignored the whispers, his hand resting securely over Claire’s on his arm, guiding her toward the VIP section.

Suddenly, a tall, older man with slicked-back gray hair and a scar across his cheek stepped into their path, holding a glass of scotch. It was Don Moretti—head of the rival Moretti syndicate. Beside him stood a few of his sneering lieutenants.

"Dominic," Moretti sneered, his tone dripping with condescension. "I didn't think you’d make it tonight. And I see you brought... interesting company."

Moretti’s eyes swept over Claire, a dismissive, mocking smile touching his lips.

"I remember her," Moretti sneered loudly enough for nearby guests to hear. "She’s the maid who spilled champagne on my coat six months ago at your villa. Tell me, Vale, are you so desperate for female attention that you're picking up the household staff now? Or did you just run out of real women?"

A few snide chuckles broke out among Moretti’s men.

Claire felt a cold spike of anxiety in her chest, but before she could shrink back, Dominic moved.

In a split second, Dominic took a step forward, grabbing Moretti by the lapels of his thousand-dollar suit jacket and slamming the older mob boss backward against a marble pillar with thunderous force.

Moretti’s scotch glass shattered on the floor. His lieutenants instinctively reached for their waistbands, but within half a second, Marco and four of Dominic’s guards had drawn their silenced weapons beneath their jackets, pointing them directly at the lieutenants' chests.

The entire ballroom went dead silent. The string orchestra stopped playing mid-note.

Dominic leaned in close to Moretti’s terrified face, his voice dropping into a deadly, vibrating growl that echoed off the high ceilings.

"Listen to me very carefully, Moretti," Dominic whispered, his gray eyes burning like furnace coals. "This woman is Claire Bennett. She is the future mistress of Villa Vale and the only woman who commands my respect in this city. If you ever speak to her again... if you ever look at her with anything less than absolute reverence... I will personally tear your syndicate apart brick by brick and feed your remains to the dogs in the alley."

Moretti swallowed hard, his face turning pale, the arrogance instantly evaporating from his eyes. "Vale... it was a joke... calm down..."

"Apologize to her," Dominic commanded coldly.

Moretti looked over at Claire, his voice shaking. "I... I apologize, Miss Bennett. Forgive me."

Dominic let go of Moretti’s coat, smoothing the crushed fabric with a single, condescending slap of his hand.

Dominic turned back to Claire, his expression instantly softening into tenderness. He offered her his arm once more.

"Shall we dance, my love?" Dominic asked gently.

Claire looked at the humbled mob boss, then at the stunned, respectful crowd watching them, and finally into the eyes of the man who ruled them all. A radiant, breathtaking smile broke across her face.

May you like

"I would love to, Dominic," she said softly, slipping her hand back into his arm.

As the music resumed, Dominic led her to the center of the dance floor, taking her in his arms, spinning her beneath the chandeliers before the eyes of the entire city.
