Chapter 5 - The War Room

By 6:00 a.m., the penthouse had transformed into a military command center.

Ten of Adrian’s most trusted lieutenants sat around the mahogany dining table, flanked by three high-level tech specialists running encrypted comms through private servers. Sitting at the head of the table was Nora, clad in a sleek black tactical turtleneck, cargo pants, and a combat harness fitted with two suppressed sidearms.

The men in the room—hardened mobsters who had spent their lives shaking down bookies and running illegal gambling rings—were listening to the former waitress with absolute, reverent attention.

"Vance’s men are private military contractors," Nora explained, pointing a red laser indicator at a three-dimensional blueprint of Navy Pier projected onto the wall. "They use standard NATO squad tactics. Four-man fire teams, overlapping fields of fire, relying heavily on satellite comms. Their strength is firepower. Their weakness is predictability."

Mason leaned forward, scratching his neck nervously. "Miss Hale... if they got satellite comms, won't they see us coming down the main pier?"

"They will see what we want them to see," Adrian spoke up from the head of the table. "At 7:30 a.m., my construction crews are going to shut down the main access road along Lake Shore Drive with eight cement mixers, claiming a water main rupture. That cuts off Vance’s land reinforcements."

"And the lake?" one of the lieutenants asked.

"My contacts at the port authority have already stationed three tugboats half a mile out," Adrian said, his voice cold and precise. "The moment Vance’s extraction boat moves, they'll block the channel."

Nora looked around the table. "I will walk down the main pier alone at 7:55 a.m. Vance will think I’m surrendering to save Adrian’s empire."

"Absolutely not," Adrian interrupted, his tone leaving no room for negotiation. "You don't go in alone."

"It's the only way he opens his command vehicle, Adrian!" Nora argued, leaning across the table. "Vance is arrogant. He wants to see me broken. He wants to personally place the cuffs on my wrists. The moment he steps out of his armored van to gloat, that’s when your team triggers the signal jammers."

Adrian stared at her for a long, heavy moment. The protective instinct in his gray eyes was unmistakable, but beneath it lay a deep respect for her deadly capability.

"Five minutes," Adrian said softly. "You give him five minutes of dialogue. If he touches you, my snipers open fire regardless of the jammers."

"Deal," Nora said.

As the lieutenants dispersed to assemble their teams and prep weapons, Adrian walked over to the floor-to-ceiling glass windows, staring out at the rain-slicked skyline of Chicago.

Nora stepped up beside him. "You don't have to do this, Adrian. Even now, you could take Julian, fly to Europe, and leave Vance to me."

Adrian didn't look away from the window. He reached out, taking her gloved hand into his own, locking his fingers tightly with hers.

"Six years ago, you chose to save my brother when your orders told you to kill him," Adrian said softly. "Tonight, I choose to stand beside you when every smart mob boss would run. You're not a ghost anymore, Nora. You're my partner. And in two hours, we finish this."
