Chapter 9 - The Trial of the Heart

Adrian reached out, taking the document from Nora’s hand and setting it aside. He turned her gently in his arms until her back was lightly pressed against the edge of the bar, his gray eyes locking onto hers with an intense, unwavering devotion.
"So," Adrian murmured, his voice dropping into a low, warm register. "No more government hunters. No more hiding in the shadows. No more twenty-dollar-an-hour waitress shifts."
Nora wrapped her arms loosely around his neck, looking up at the man who had risked his entire empire to protect her. "Does that mean I'm fired?"
"Extremely fired," Adrian teased softly, his thumb tracing the gentle curve of her cheekbone. "Though I do have an open executive position on my board. Head of Family Security."
"Sounds like a lot of paperwork," Nora replied, a playful smirk touching her lips. "What are the benefits?"
"A mansion in Oak Park," Adrian said, stepping closer until there was no space left between them. "A husband who listens to orders... and a promise that you will never have to fight alone again."
Nora’s smirk softened into something deep, genuine, and overwhelmingly beautiful.
"You know," Nora whispered, leaning her forehead against his, "when you made that ridiculous bet three weeks ago in front of three hundred people... I thought you were the most arrogant mob boss in Chicago."
"And now?" Adrian asked softly.
"Now... I think you're the smartest man I've ever met."
Adrian laughed—a rich, deep sound that filled the mahogany room—before closing the distance between them and pressing his lips to hers in a slow, deep, possessive kiss.
It wasn't a tactical maneuver. It wasn't a legal shield. It was the birth of a future built on trust, respect, and a love that had survived the darkest shadows of both their worlds.
When he pulled back, Nora was breathing slightly fast, her dark eyes shining with pure happiness.
"So, Mr. Vale," Nora teased, resting her hands against his chest. "Are we doing a courthouse wedding, or do I need to request Saturday off?"
May you like
Adrian smiled, pulling a small velvet box from his jacket pocket and popping it open to reveal a dazzling, pear-cut diamond ring that sparkled like ice under the chandeliers.
"Saturday," Adrian promised softly, slipping the ring onto her finger. "And the whole city is invited."
