Chapter 7 - The Battle of the Pier

From the fog-shrouded waters on both sides of the pier, four high-speed police tactical boats surged forward, their blue lights flashing as team members deployed smoke canisters across the dock.

At the same time, thirty of Adrian’s heavily armed enforcers poured out of the storage pavilions, cutting off Vance’s mercenaries from their vehicles.

"Ambush!" Vance screamed, reaching for a weapon concealed inside his cane. "Kill her!"

Before the nearest contractor could raise his submachine gun, Nora closed the gap. She grabbed Vance’s arm, twisted it behind his back with a bone-shattering crunch, and used his body as a human shield as the contractor opened fire.

SPAT! SPAT! SPAT!

The contractor’s rounds struck Vance’s heavy kevlar coat. Vance howled in pain as Nora drove her heel into the back of his knee, forcing the Director to his knees.

Nora snatched Vance’s concealed pistol from his belt, spun, and fired three shots into the primary contractor's chest.

Around them, Navy Pier descended into an inferno of gunfire.

Adrian’s men, equipped with heavy body armor and tactical shotguns, advanced in a tight formation, laying down suppressing fire that pinned Vance’s contractors against the railing. Above them, two sharp rifle cracks echoed through the fog—Adrian’s counter-snipers, positioned on the roof of the crystal garden, eliminated Vance’s shooters on the Ferris wheel.

Adrian himself stepped through the thick white smoke, holding a tactical rifle, flanked by Mason and four lieutenants. He moved with a cold, terrifying precision that proved he wasn't just a mob boss who sat behind a desk—he was a man who had fought his way to the top of Chicago’s underworld.

"Secure the perimeter!" Adrian ordered, his voice cutting through the gunfire. "Leave Vance alive!"

Vance lay on the wet concrete, clutching his broken shoulder, coughing blood as the smoke drifted over him. He looked up in absolute terror as Adrian Vale stopped beside Nora, resting a heavy hand on her shoulder.

"It's over, Vance," Adrian said, looking down at the disgraced Director with cold gray eyes. "Your comms are jammed. Your boat is blocked by port authority. And your private contractors are currently being disarmed by my men."

Vance spat blood onto Adrian’s shoe, his face contorted in rage. "You... you think you can hold me, Vale? I'm a Director in the Department of Defense! The federal government will tear this city apart to get me back!"

"They won't have to," Nora said, stepping forward and dropping a heavy black flash drive onto Vance’s chest.

Vance blinked through the pain. "What is that?"

"That," Nora explained softly, "is a complete copy of your illegal offshore accounts, your private assassination orders, and the full record of Operation Nightfall. Ten minutes ago, while your comms were jammed, my automated server broadcast that file to the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, the FBI Internal Affairs Division, and the Washington Post."

Vance’s face went completely ash-grey. The power, the political immunity, the shadow empire he had spent thirty years building—dismantled in a single click.

"You're not a Director anymore, Vance," Nora whispered, leaning down until her face was inches from his. "You're just a traitor facing a life sentence in a federal supermax."

Sirens echoed in the distance—dozens of federal Marshals and state police cruisers, tipped off by Nora’s automated broadcast, converging on Navy Pier.

Adrian looked down at Nora, offering her his hand. "Come on, fiancée. Let's let the feds clean up their own trash."
