Chapter 2: The Lion’s Den

The sleek black sedan came to a silent halt in front of the grand limestone portico of Blackwood Estates. The driver stepped out, opening Rose’s door with a robotic precision that made her throat tighten. As she stepped onto the polished cobblestone, she felt utterly microscopic against the backdrop of the colossal mansion. The towering oak doors were already swinging inward, revealing a grand foyer of black marble and cascading crystal chandeliers that put the Crystal Palace Diner to shame.

Standing in the center of the foyer was a man who could only be described as a force of nature.

He was tall, broad-shouldered, and dressed in a bespoke charcoal suit that screamed old money and absolute authority. His hair was dark as midnight, slicked back perfectly, emphasizing a sharp, aristocratic jawline and a faint, jagged scar running down his left cheek. His eyes, cold and piercing like chips of flint, locked onto Rose the moment she crossed the threshold. This was Victor Blackwood—the undisputed king of the city’s underworld.

"So, you're the one," Victor said. His voice was a low, resonant baritone that sent a tremor straight down Rose’s spine. He didn't smile. He didn't offer a hand. He simply evaluated her like a piece of property that had accidentally crossed into his territory.

"I... I was invited by an elderly woman yesterday," Rose stammered, holding up the gold-embossed business card like a makeshift shield. "She told me to come today."

A sudden movement on the grand staircase drew Rose’s eyes upward. Descending the steps was the woman from the diner, but the transformation was jaw-dropping. Gone was the tattered coat and the stained dress. She wore a tailored crimson silk gown, a priceless diamond necklace gleaming around her throat, and she walked with the absolute regality of a queen mother. This was Elena Blackwood, the matriarch of the family.

"Ah, Rose, you came," Elena said, a warm, genuine smile gracing her features. "Ignore my son. Victor treats everyone like a federal agent until they prove otherwise."

"Mother, this is absurd," Victor said, turning his cold gaze to Elena, though his tone softened with a layer of deep respect. "You ran a test in a public diner, faking a fall, just to find someone with 'pure morals'? It’s a security liability. The Valetti family is breathing down our necks, and you are playing fairy godmother to a waitress."

"The Valetti family consists of uncultured thugs, Victor," Elena replied smoothly, reaching the bottom of the stairs and gently taking Rose’s hand. Her grip was just as strong as it had been the day before. "And Rose is not a liability. She was the only soul in that wretched establishment who saw a human being in need instead of an inconvenience. In our world, loyalty and genuine kindness are rarer than flawless diamonds. I want her here."

Victor let out a sharp, cynical breath, his eyes shifting back to Rose. He walked a slow circle around her, his leather shoes clicking rhythmically against the marble floor. Rose forced herself to stand tall, refusing to let him see her knees shaking.

"Kindness doesn't survive in this house, Miss Vance," Victor murmured, stopping directly in front of her. He was so close she could smell the scent of expensive tobacco, cedarwood, and danger. "Out there, you serve coffee. In here, we deal in blood, power, and survival. My mother thinks you’re a saint. I think you're out of your depth."

"I didn't ask to be brought here to be judged, Mr. Blackwood," Rose said, surprise at her own boldness making her voice clear. "I came because your mother asked me to. If my presence is a threat to your empire, I can find my own way back to the bus stop."

For a fraction of a second, Victor’s flinty eyes flickered with something resembling amusement. The corner of his mouth twitched, though his stoic expression quickly returned.

"The buses don't run up this hill, Miss Vance," Victor said coldly. "And since my mother has clearly decided to keep you as her personal guest, you will stay. But let one thing be clear: you do not wander this estate alone, you do not ask questions, and you stay far away from my business. My world is a meat grinder, and I have no intention of sweeping up your pieces."

May you like

With that, Victor turned on his heel and strode down the long corridor, his guards falling into step behind him like shadows.

Elena patted Rose’s hand reassuringly. "Don't mind him, my dear. He has a lot on his shoulders. Come, let’s get you out of that awful uniform and show you to your room. Your life at the diner is officially over."
