Chapter 4: Blood and Roses

The attack on the mansion was swift, brutal, and orchestrated by the Valetti family—a rival syndicate looking to decapitate the Blackwood leadership. Thanks to Victor’s ruthless efficiency and the arrival of his elite enforcers, the attackers were neutralized within twenty minutes, but the damage was severe. The beautiful estate was scarred by bullet holes, and three guards lay dead in the courtyard.

In the aftermath, the mansion was placed on absolute lockdown. Victor was a man possessed by a cold, calculating rage. He spent forty-eight hours straight in his war room, hunting down the traitors who had leaked the estate’s security codes.

Rose, shaken but physically unharmed, spent her days helping Elena, whose fragile health had taken a hit from the stress of the attack.

On the third night, unable to sleep, Rose wrapped a shawl around her shoulders and walked out into the courtyard. The air was crisp, and the scent of gunpowder still faintly lingered among the blooming white roses. She stopped by a stone fountain, watching the water ripple in the moonlight.

"You should be inside," a voice rasped from the shadows.

Victor stepped into the moonlight. He had blood on the cuff of his white shirt, and his knuckles were bruised and raw. He looked feral, dangerous, like a wolf that had just finished defending its pack.

Rose didn't flinch this time. She looked at his bruised hands and felt a strange, profound ache in her chest. "You're hurt," she whispered.

"It's not my blood," Victor said coldly, leaning against the fountain. He looked at her, his eyes weary. "You saw what happened here, Rose. This is what I am. This is what this family is. My grandfather built this empire on bones, and I have to maintain it with iron. Are you ready to pack your bags and go back to your diner now?"

Rose walked over to him, stepping into his personal space, defying the invisible wall he always put up. She reached out, her fingers trembling slightly, and gently touched his bruised knuckles. Victor stiffened, his breath hitching, but he didn't pull away.

"I was terrified during the attack, Victor," she said softly, using his first name for the very first time. "But I wasn't terrified of you. You threw yourself on top of me. You protected me when you didn't even trust me. A monster doesn't do that."

Victor stared down at her, his flinty eyes melting into an intense, burning heat. The vulnerability in her voice, her total lack of fear toward his monstrous side, cracked the armor he had worn his entire adult life.

"You're a fool, Rose," he whispered, his voice suddenly thick with a raw, undeniable emotion. "You shouldn't be near me. I ruin everything I touch."

"Then ruin me," she breathed.

Victor lost his control. He reached out, his large hands grabbing her waist and pulling her flush against his body. His mouth came down on hers with a fierce, desperate hunger. It was a chaotic, possessive kiss, born of the adrenaline of survival and the sudden explosion of a passion they had both tried to deny for weeks. Rose melted into him, her arms wrapping tightly around his neck, anchoring herself to the dangerous man who had become her protector.

When he finally pulled back, his breathing was ragged, his forehead resting against hers. "If you stay, Rose, there is no going back. The Valettis know who you are now. You are mine. And I will burn this city to ash before I let anyone hurt you."

"I'm not going back, Victor," Rose said fiercely. "I'm staying right here."

Chapter 5: The Corporate Trap

The war between the Blackwoods and the Valettis quickly shifted from the dark alleys to the high-stakes world of corporate finance. The Valetti family had partnered with a corrupt city official, Councilman Thomas, to execute a legal and financial siege on Blackwood shipping ports—the legitimate front that laundered and sustained the family’s billions.

If the city revoked the Blackwood port licenses, the empire would collapse from the inside out, leaving them vulnerable to a full-scale federal investigation.

Victor called a massive strategy meeting in the estate's grand library. His top capos and lawyers were present, their faces grim as they reviewed the city council's legal filings. Rose sat quietly in the corner, observing the documents with a sharp, analytical mind that her diner coworkers had never appreciated.

"Thomas has us cornered," Victor’s chief legal counsel, Marcus, said, slamming a folder down. "He’s using an anonymous whistleblower's testimony regarding safety violations to freeze our assets at Port 4. We can't bribe him out of this; he's running for mayor on an anti-crime platform. He needs our heads on a spike to win the election."

Victor leaned back in his leather chair, his jaw clenched, his fingers tapping a lethal rhythm on the mahogany table. "Then we eliminate the whistleblower before the council vote tomorrow morning."

"No," Rose’s voice cut through the room, drawing fifteen pairs of hardened, criminal eyes toward her.

Victor raised an eyebrow. "Rose, I told you to stay out of this."

"You're fighting a legal trap with violence, Victor, which is exactly what they want you to do," Rose said, standing up and walking over to the table. She pulled a document from the folder Marcus had discarded. "Look at the dates of these alleged safety violations. They all occurred during the three weeks Councilman Thomas’s private construction company was bidding on the luxury waterfront development project right next to Port 4."

Marcus blinked, quickly grabbing the papers. "She's right. If Port 4 is shut down due to safety violations, the property value drops, allowing Thomas’s shell company to buy the surrounding land for pennies on the dollar."

Rose looked directly at Victor, her eyes shining with strategic brilliance. "You don't need to kill anyone, Victor. You just need to expose Thomas’s insider trading and extortion to the press before the council meeting at 9:00 AM tomorrow. If he goes down for corruption, his legal filings against your ports go down with him."

A profound silence filled the room. The hardened capos looked at Rose with a newfound, immense respect. Victor stared at her, a slow, proud smile finally spreading across his handsome face. It was the first genuine smile Rose had ever seen on him, and it took her breath away.

"Marcus," Victor ordered, his voice booming with absolute confidence. "Get our media assets on the phone. Deliver everything Rose just found to the front page of the Tribune. Let’s see how the Councilman enjoys the spotlight."

Victor stood up, walking over to Rose in front of all his men. He didn't care about showing vulnerability anymore. He took her hand and pressed a deep kiss onto her knuckles.

"You're not just a saint, Rose," Victor whispered, his eyes locked onto hers with fierce devotion. "You're a genius. My mother was right about you from the start."
