Chapter 3: The Metamorphosis

Two weeks passed, and Rose’s existence shifted into a surreal, golden cage. Elena had completely integrated her into the estate, not as a servant, but as a companion. Rose was given a stunning bedroom overlooking the rose gardens, a wardrobe filled with designer clothes she hadn't known existed, and access to a massive library that became her sanctuary.
Yet, despite the luxury, the underlying tension of the Blackwood empire was impossible to ignore. Rose frequently saw heavily armed men patrolling the grounds. Armed meetings took place behind the closed double doors of Victor’s study, and the dark, brooding presence of the Don himself hung over every dinner.
Victor rarely spoke to her, but his eyes followed her everywhere. Whether she was reading in the garden or dining with Elena, she could feel his intense, calculating gaze tracking her every movement. It wasn't predatory; it was curious, as if he were waiting for her to reveal a hidden agenda.
One rainy Tuesday evening, Elena fell asleep early due to her medication, leaving Rose to dine alone in the massive banquet hall. As she picked at her exquisite salmon dish, the heavy doors opened, and Victor walked in. He had discarded his suit jacket, his white shirt unbuttoned at the collar, his tie loosened. He looked exhausted, the dark circles under his eyes emphasizing his rugged handsomeness.
He paused upon seeing her, then slowly walked over and sat at the head of the table, pouring himself a generous glass of scotch.
"You're still here," Victor observed, swirling the amber liquid.
"Your mother is very persuasive," Rose replied softly, wiping her mouth with a linen napkin. "And she genuinely cares about me. I haven't had that in a very long time."
Victor studied her over the rim of his glass. "My mother sees the world as she wants it to be. I see it as it is. I looked into your background, Rose. Three years at the diner, a tiny apartment in the slums, no living family, a mountain of student debt from a degree you couldn't finish because your father got sick. You had every reason to take my mother's money and run. Why haven't you asked for a dime?"
Rose felt a flash of anger, her eyes flashing in the dim candlelight. "Is that what this is? You think I'm a con artist waiting for a payout? I didn't know who your mother was when she fell. I helped her because she was a human being in pain. You might think money buys everything, Mr. Blackwood, but it doesn't buy decency."
Victor didn't yell. He didn't react with the violence his reputation promised. Instead, he simply looked at her, his expression unreadable.
"In my world, Rose, everyone has a price," he said quietly. "If they don't want money, they want power. If they don't want power, they want revenge. When someone shows up with no angles, it makes me deeply uncomfortable."
"Then I guess you'll just have to be uncomfortable," Rose said, standing up from the table.
As she turned to leave, a sudden, thunderous crash echoed through the front foyer. The sound of automatic gunfire ripped through the silence of the mansion, accompanied by the agonizing screams of security guards.
"Get down!" Victor roared, his instincts kicking in instantly.
Before Rose could even process the sound, Victor was on his feet. He lunged across the space, grabbing her by the waist and pulling her down to the floor just as a hail of bullets shattered the stained-glass windows of the dining room. Shards of colored glass rained down upon them like a deadly storm.
Victor threw his heavy body over hers, shielding her completely. Rose gasped, her face pressed against his chest, her hands gripping his shirt as the world outside erupted into absolute chaos. She could hear his heart beating in a fast, rhythmic, controlled thud—the heartbeat of a man born for war.

"Stay flat, don't move, and don't make a sound," Victor hissed in her ear, his hand reaching into his shoulder holster and drawing a sleek, black semi-automatic pistol.
For the first time in her life, Rose was staring directly into the abyss of Victor's world, and she was absolutely terrified.
