Chapter 3 - Shadows of the Past

Two hours later, I was sitting in a high-tech mobile command center parked two streets away from the Vance estate.

Multiple screens hummed with encrypted data feeds, financial records, and live satellite surveillance. Sitting across from me was Sarah Chen, a former intelligence analyst who had served under my command in Europe and now ran one of the most elite private security intelligence firms in the country.

"How is Lily?" Sarah asked gently, placing a paper cup of hot black coffee in front of me.

"She’s in surgery," I swallowed hard, the cold coffee bitter on my tongue. "Internal bleeding in her shoulder, severe concussion, three broken ribs. The doctors said if she had taken another hit like that... she wouldn't have survived the afternoon."

Sarah’s face hardened into a mask of pure steel. "Then let's make sure Richard Vance never sees the light of day again. Take a look at this, Colonel."

She tapped a key on her laptop, projecting a series of complex corporate flowcharts onto the main screen.

"When you called General Vance, we initiated a deep-level forensic audit of Vance Development Group," Sarah explained, pointing a red laser at a web of offshore accounts tied to shell companies in Panama and the Cayman Islands. "Richard Vance isn't just a brutal domestic abuser. He’s a financial parasite. Over the past four years, he’s been embezzling tens of millions from city infrastructure grants, bribing local judges, and laundering money for a eastern European human trafficking ring."

I leaned closer to the screen. "Does he have leverage on local law enforcement?"

"Massive leverage," Sarah nodded. "Chief Sterling tried to play ball earlier, but Richard’s father, Edward Vance, built a network of blackmail over thirty years. They have dirt on every judge, politician, and high-ranking officer in this county. That's why Lily felt trapped. She tried to leave him six months ago, Artie."

My heart squeezed tightly in my chest. "She did?"

"Yes," Sarah pulled up a hidden police report that had been quietly deleted from the municipal system three months ago. "She walked into the second precinct with bruised arms. Officer on duty took her report, but before the ink was dry, Chief Sterling got a call from Eleanor Vance. The report was shredded, and Richard brought Lily back home that same night."

I squeezed my eyes shut, my fists clenching so hard my knuckles turned white.

My poor, brave girl had tried to escape. She had tried to use the system, but the system was bought and paid for by the monsters who held her captive. She had endured months of silent torment because she thought there was no way out.

"Where is Richard right now?" I asked, opening my eyes.

"He’s still inside the mansion with his mother," Sarah said. "His high-priced defense lawyers just arrived at the gates, along with a team of private security guards he hired to secure the perimeter. They think they can weather the storm until tomorrow morning, destroy their internal hard drives, and use their political connections to quash the federal investigation."

I stood up from the chair, reaching for my heavy canvas jacket hanging on the wall.

"They think this is a legal battle," I said quietly, checking the magazine of my sidearm before holstering it safely out of sight. "They think they're playing chess."

"What are you going to do, Colonel?" Sarah asked.

"I'm going to show them what happens when you build a house of cards on top of a lion's den," I replied.
