Chapter 4 - The Fortress Crumbles

Night fell over the wealthy enclave of Oak Ridge, casting long, dark shadows across the Vance estate.

Richard had hired eight armed private security contractors—former disgraced cops and hired muscle—to guard the perimeter of his property. The estate had been put on total lockdown. High-powered floodlights swept across the pristine lawns, and security cameras monitored every inch of the perimeter wall.

Inside the grand study, Richard was nervously pacing back and forth, holding a glass of Scotch in one hand and a encrypted phone in the other. His mother, Eleanor, sat on the velvet sofa, her hands shaking as she tried to compose a list of political donors to call for help.

"Where is the tech team?!" Richard yelled at his chief of security, a hulking man named Miller who stood near the doors. "I told them to wipe the basement servers three hours ago!"

"The server room is locked with high-level encryption, Mr. Vance," the security chief replied nervously. "Every time we try to initiate a manual hard-drive wipe, the system locks us out. It’s like someone is controlling our internal network from the outside."

"Fix it!" Richard screamed, throwing his Scotch glass against the marble fireplace, shattering it into a hundred pieces. "If the federal prosecutors get those files, we're all going to prison!"

Suddenly, the house plunged into pitch-black darkness.

The hum of the air conditioning died. The floodlights outside extinguished instantly. The security monitors went dead.

"What happened to the backup generator?!" Eleanor shrieked into the darkness.

Outside, a faint, rhythmic sound echoed through the night air—the sound of glass breaking, followed by the muffled, frantic shouts of Richard's hired guards being taken down one by one in the dark.

Inside the house, the silence was deafening.

Richard pulled a nickel-plated hand-gun from his desk drawer, his hands trembling so violently he nearly dropped it. "Miller! Get over here! Guard the door!"

No answer came from the doorway.

"Miller?!" Richard called out, stepping toward the entrance of the study.

A heavy object dropped into the room, rolling across the hardwood floor until it bumped against Richard's shoe.

In the dim moonlight streaming through the grand windows, Richard looked down. It was his security chief’s radio, smashed into pieces.

A shadow detached itself from the doorway.

I stepped into the moonlight. I wasn't wearing tactical gear or a uniform. Just my old boots, my dark jeans, and a cold, relentless expression that froze the blood in Richard's veins.

"How... how did you get past the guards?" Richard stammered, raising the shaking handgun toward my chest. "I have eight armed men out there!"

"You had eight men," I corrected him softly, stepping forward into the room with absolute composure. "They're all asleep on your manicured lawn. You shouldn't hire mercenaries who care more about their hourly rate than your life, Richard."

"Stay back!" Richard yelled, his finger tightening on the trigger. "I'll shoot you! I swear to God I'll blow your head off!"

May you like

I didn't stop walking. I took three calm, deliberate steps toward him, my eyes locked on his.

"You don't have the stomach to pull that trigger, Richard," I said, my voice echoing in the dark room. "You only know how to hit women who can't fight back."
