Chapter 6 - The Broken Wings

I arrived at Fort Meade's private medical facility just as the sun began to rise over the horizon, painting the sky in soft shades of gold and pink.
The hallway leading to Lily’s room was guarded by two heavily armed military guards, who snapped to attention and saluted as I approached. I nodded back silently, pushed the door open, and stepped inside.
The room was quiet, save for the steady, rhythmic beep of the heart monitor.
Lily was propped up in the bed, surrounded by warm blankets. Her left eye was still swollen shut, and thick bandages wrapped around her shoulder and throat, but her skin had regained some of its color. Sitting on the nightstand beside her was a vase of fresh yellow daffodils—the same flowers that had been blooming outside my kitchen window on Easter morning.
As the door clicked shut, she turned her head slowly.
When she saw me standing there, her eyes filled with tears, and her lip began to tremble.
"Dad..." she whispered, her voice still hoarse from the trauma to her throat.
I walked quickly to her side, sitting on the edge of the bed and carefully taking her hand in mine, mindful of the IV tubes attached to her arm.
"I'm here, baby," I said softly, my voice cracking with emotion. "I'm right here."
Lily broke down into soft, healing tears, burying her face against my chest as I wrapped my arms around her, protecting her from the world just as I had done when she was a little girl.
"I'm so sorry, Dad," she sobbed into my flannel shirt. "I’m so sorry I didn't tell you sooner. I was so scared... he told me he would kill you if I ever tried to leave him. He said he owned this town... that nobody could help me..."
I stroked her hair gently, my own tears falling freely down my face.
"You don't ever have to apologize to me, Lily," I whispered into her hair. "It's my fault. I spent so many years trying to put my past behind me, trying to be a quiet old man, that I stopped paying attention. I should have seen the signs. I should have protected you."
"You came for me," she sobbed, looking up at me with her one open eye. "How... how did you do that, Dad? The helicopter... the guards... who are you?"
I offered her a soft, sad smile, wiping a tear from her swollen cheek.
"I'm just your dad, sweetheart," I said gently. "A dad who loves you more than life itself. And a dad who used to have a very special job making sure bad men couldn't hurt good people."
She clung to my hand, resting her head back against the pillows as the exhaustion finally caught up with her.
"Is it over?" she asked quietly, her eyelids fluttering shut.

"It's over, baby," I promised her, kissing her forehead. "Richard and his mother are in federal custody. They will never touch you, see you, or hurt you ever again. Your life belongs to you now."
Within minutes, her breathing evened out, and she fell into a deep, restful sleep—the first peaceful sleep she had enjoyed in years.
