Chapter 4 - The Counter-Attack
By afternoon, Caroline’s legal team had struck first. They filed a petition alleging that Alexander had suffered a psychological breakdown due to work stress, taken the children in the middle of the night without consent, and was keeping them in an unstable environment.
The media, tipped off by a public relations firm hired by Caroline's family, began running subtle headlines: “Tech Executive Alexander Hale Facing Family Crisis Amid Allegations of Instability.”
Alexander sat in Marcus’s office, watching the news play out on the screen. He felt a suffocating sense of helplessness. The legal system was moving like a slow, bureaucratic beast, while his family’s private pain was being weaponized against him.
"We need a definitive evaluation," Marcus said, pacing the room. "The court has assigned a child advocate to interview Emma and Oliver tomorrow. If Caroline's team manages to intimidate them, or if the children are too terrified to speak the truth, the judge might grant supervised visitation to both parents until a full trial. That means Caroline gets them back part-time."
"No," Alexander said firmly. "I will not let her near them again."
That evening, Alexander went back to the hotel. He didn't let his stress show to the kids. He ordered their favorite dinner, played a board game with them on the carpet, and tucked them in with a bedtime story.
As Emma was falling asleep, she reached out and caught his sleeve. "Dad? Are we going back to that house?"
"No, Em. We're going to find a new house. A safe one."
