Chapter 9 - Healing in the Light

Six months later, the old mansion had been sold, its proceeds split and the chapter firmly closed. Alexander bought a beautiful, sun-drenched cottage closer to the coast. It had a large backyard with an old oak tree, a swing set, and windows that let in the ocean breeze.

Alexander had stepped down from his high-stress corporate executive role, taking a consultant position that allowed him to work entirely from home. He was there every single afternoon when the school bus pulled up to the corner.

On a warm Saturday afternoon, the family was in the kitchen. Milk was on the counter, but this time, it was being poured into a large bowl to make pancake batter. Oliver was covered in flour, giggling hysterically as he tried to stir the mixture with a wooden spoon.

Emma sat at the kitchen island, drawing a picture. It wasn't a dark cage or a hidden closet anymore. It was a picture of a beautiful, bright yellow house with a massive sun in the sky, and three figures holding hands in the front yard.

Alexander walked over, placing a gentle hand on Emma’s shoulder. "What do you think, Em? Do we need more chocolate chips in the pancakes?"

Emma looked up at him. The hollow, fearful look in her eyes had completely vanished, replaced by the brilliant, carefree spark of an eight-year-old girl who knew she was loved and protected.

"Definitely more chocolate chips, Dad," she laughed.
