Chapter 7 - The Trial of Truth
The emergency custody hearing took place in a closed courtroom three days later. The judge, a stern woman named Honorable Judith Vance, brooked no nonsense from either legal team.
Caroline’s high-priced defense attorney attempted to claim the diary was fabricated, coached by Alexander to alienate the children from their mother. They presented character references from wealthy socialites, painting Caroline as a dedicated philanthropist and loving parent who was simply overwhelmed by an absent husband.
Then, Marcus stood up. He didn't give a grand speech. He simply presented the physical evidence: the photographs of the bruises, the audio recording from Dr. Gomez, and the pages of Emma's diary, which had been authenticated by a forensic document examiner.
"Your Honor," Marcus concluded softly. "Alexander Hale admittely made the mistake of working too hard and missing the signs. But the moment the veil was lifted, he did what any real father would do—he pulled his children out of the fire. Caroline Hale did not care for these children; she controlled them through terror."
The judge reviewed the documents in absolute silence for several agonizing minutes. The only sound in the courtroom was the ticking of the wall clock.

Finally, Judge Vance looked up, her gaze fixing directly on Caroline, who sat perfectly poised, still trying to project an aura of innocent nobility.
"Mrs. Hale," the judge said, her voice dripping with ice. "Your behavior is abhorrent. The fact that you attempted to destroy your daughter's writings to cover up your cruelty speaks volumes about your lack of remorse."
