Chapter 2 - The Shadows of Vanessa Cole

By noon, the quiet hum of the estate was shattered by the arrival of Vanessa’s whirlwind energy. The sound of her sharp heels against the marble foyer was a drumbeat of impending conflict. Maya was in the grand dining room, polishing the heavy silver candelabras, when the doors burst open.

Vanessa stood in the doorway, looking immaculate in a tailored cream suit, her blonde hair perfectly coiffed, her diamond engagement ring catching the light. But her eyes were wild, dark with an anger that had been simmering since the previous night.

"Out," Vanessa barked, gesturing to the two under-maids who were dusting the sideboards. The girls didn't hesitate; they practically scrambled past her, leaving Maya alone in the cavernous room.

Vanessa walked in, closing the heavy oak doors behind her with a definitive slam. She walked slowly around the long mahogany table, her eyes tracking Maya like a predator evaluating prey.

"You think you're very clever, don't you?" Vanessa said, her voice dropping into a low, venomous purr. She stopped just two feet from Maya, the scent of her expensive, cloying perfume filling the space. "You think because Ethan had a moment of misplaced pity last night that you’ve won some sort of prize?"

Maya didn't lower her head. She held the polishing rag tightly in her hand, keeping her voice level. "I don't think I've won anything, Miss Vanessa. I am simply doing my job."

"Your job is to be invisible, Maya. Your job is to keep your little mistake of a child out of my sight and out of my way," Vanessa hissed, leaning in close. "Last night, that little brat dropped his dirty toys right in front of my path. When I pushed him aside, you had the absolute audacity to scream at me. In front of my fiancé."

"He is two years old, Miss Vanessa. He didn't drop his toy maliciously. And you didn't push him aside—you shoved him to the floor," Maya said, her voice trembling despite her best efforts to remain stoic. "I will protect my son from anyone. Even you."

Vanessa laughed, a sharp, ugly sound that echoed off the high ceilings. "Protect him? With what? You have nothing, Maya. You live in a box in the worst part of town. You survive on the scraps this family throws at you. If I speak to the agency that placed you here, you’ll be blacklisted before sundown. You won't even be able to get a job scrubbing floors in a subway station."

She stepped closer, her perfectly manicured finger pointing directly at Maya’s chest. "Ethan is a crippled man who is currently feeling defensive because he can't control his own body. He took your side because he wanted to prove he still has teeth. But don't mistake his corporate charity for affection. The Cole-Vance merger is bigger than you, bigger than your son, and bigger than Ethan’s passing moods. We are getting married in three months, and the very first thing I will do as Mrs. Cole is throw you and your bastard child out into the street."

Maya felt a cold sweat break out along her spine, but she refused to give Vanessa the satisfaction of seeing her cry. "If Mr. Cole wishes to terminate my employment, I will accept it from him. Until then, I suggest you let me finish my work."

Vanessa’s face contorted with rage. For a second, Maya thought the woman might actually strike her. But Vanessa pulled back, smoothing down her cream jacket with a chillingly fast return to composure.

"Enjoy your little days in the sun, Maya," Vanessa whispered, her eyes narrowing into cold slits. "Because the fall is going to be very, very hard."

With that, she turned on her heel and swept out of the room, leaving Maya alone in the silence, the silver candelabra cold and heavy in her hands.
