Chapter 7 - The Maid's Testimony

The silence that greeted Maya as she entered the boardroom was absolute. Twelve pairs of eyes, hardened by decades of corporate warfare, locked onto her. Vanessa sat near the back of the room, her smile sharp and predatory.
"State your name for the record," Arthur Vance’s lawyer said, not even looking up from his tablet.
"Maya Lin," she said, her voice clear, carrying surprisingly well through the large room.
"Miss Lin, what is the nature of your relationship with Ethan Cole?" the lawyer asked, leaning forward. "Did you enter his private quarters at 2:00 AM with the intention of securing financial favors? Did you use your child to gain access to his private life?"
Maya looked at the lawyer, then at the board members, and finally at Ethan. Ethan was watching her, his eyes full of a quiet, desperate plea. He was shaking his head slightly, telling her to stop, telling her to save herself.
"I am a maid, gentlemen," Maya began, her voice steadying as she spoke. "I earn twenty-two dollars an hour. I clean the toilets, I scrub the grout, and I carry away the garbage that the people in this room leave behind. My relationship with Mr. Cole is simple: he is my employer. And until last night, he was a man who didn't even know my last name."
"Then explain the photograph, Miss Lin," Arthur Vance demanded.
"The photograph shows a man who was trying to help a staff member who was being threatened by his fiancée," Maya said, turning her gaze directly onto Vanessa. "Miss Vanessa Cole shoved my two-year-old son to the floor because his toy was in her path. When I defended my child, Miss Vanessa threatened to ensure I would never work again. Mr. Cole saw this. He saw the cruelty in his own house, and for the first time in four months, he chose to stand up—not for corporate strategy, but because he couldn't watch another person be broken by the people in this room."
The board members looked at each other, murmuring. Vanessa’s smile vanished.
"You’re lying!" Vanessa shouted, standing up. "You're an opportunistic little—"
"I have the security footage from the kitchen, Miss Vanessa," Maya interrupted softly. "The estate kitchen has an independent backup server that isn't connected to the main house system. I manage the inventory logs there. I downloaded the footage from last night before I came here. It shows you throwing a glass at my son. It shows you screaming at the staff."

Maya pulled a small USB drive from her pocket and set it gently on the glass table.
"Mr. Cole didn't lie to the world because he wanted to commit fraud," Maya said, looking at the board. "He hid his recovery because he knew that the moment he showed strength, the people he was supposed to trust would try to tear him down. And looking around this room today, it seems he was entirely right."
