Chapter 3 - A Hidden Alliance

The rain began late in the afternoon, a steady, rhythmic pouring that turned the sprawling gardens outside into a gray blur. Maya sat in the small storage room, watching Leo trace his finger along the condensation on the window pane. He was humming a nonsense song, entirely oblivious to the sword of Damocles hanging over their heads.

A soft knock on the door broke her out of her thoughts. She opened it to find Gerald, Ethan’s long-time personal assistant and confidant. Gerald was a quiet man in his late forties, always dressed in impeccable suits, possessing a face that was a vault of secrets.

"Maya," Gerald said, looking around the small room before stepping inside and closing the door behind him. "Do you have a moment?"

"Of course, Gerald. Is something wrong? Does Mr. Cole need something?"

"Mr. Cole is currently resting," Gerald said, his eyes softening as he looked at Leo, who waved his stuffed bear at him. "I came to speak with you privately. I heard what happened in the dining room with Miss Vanessa today."

Maya sighed, rubbing her temples. "Is the agency terminating me?"

"No," Gerald said firmly. "In fact, quite the opposite. Mr. Cole has explicitly instructed me to ensure that your employment status remains untouched, regardless of what Miss Vanessa demands. But that isn't why I'm here."

Gerald stepped closer, his voice dropping to a whisper. "Maya, you are a perceptive woman. You see things in this house that others miss because they are too busy looking at their own reflections. I need to know... have you noticed anything unusual about Mr. Cole’s recovery?"

Maya’s breath caught. She thought of the night before—the sight of Ethan standing by the elevator, his feet flat on the floor, his balance perfect for that one, fleeting second. She looked at Gerald, trying to read his intentions. Was he trying to protect Ethan, or was he part of the corporate machinery that Vanessa claimed to control?

"Why do you ask, Gerald?" she asked cautiously.

Gerald sighed, a deep, weary sound. "The car accident four months ago was not an accident, Maya. The brake lines on Mr. Cole’s vehicle were compromised. The public believes he is permanently paralyzed because that is the narrative that keeps the corporate vipers from circling too closely while he restructures the company. If the board thinks he is incapacitated long-term, they will force a vote to replace him with someone more... malleable. Someone like Vanessa’s father."

Maya felt the pieces of the puzzle clicking into place. The wheelchair wasn't just a medical necessity; it was a shield. A way to make his enemies underestimate him while he worked in the shadows.

"He can stand," Maya said softly, deciding to trust the older man. "I saw him last night. Just for a second. Before he realized I was there."

Gerald didn't look surprised. He simply nodded. "He is stronger than he lets on, but his physical recovery is only half the battle. He is isolated, Maya. His family is gone, his board is full of traitors, and the woman he is engaged to is trying to swallow his empire whole. Last night, when he defended you, it was the first time in four months I’ve seen him care about something other than corporate survival."

"I am just a maid, Gerald," Maya said, her voice laced with fear. "I can't be part of a corporate war. I have to protect Leo."

May you like

"By staying here and doing exactly what you are doing, you are protecting him," Gerald said gently. "Ethan needs people around him who cannot be bought. Vanessa is planning something, Maya. I can feel it in the air. Keep your eyes open. And if you see something... tell me. Or tell him."

As Gerald left the room, Maya looked back at Leo. The sanctuary of the small storage room suddenly felt like the front lines of a very quiet, very dangerous war.
