Chapter 8 - The Table Turns

The presentation of the kitchen security footage was the final nail in the Vance family's coffin. The video was clear, brutal, and impossible to refute. It showed Vanessa’s explosive, unhinged attack on a two-year-old child, and it showed Ethan’s calm, defensive intervention.

The board’s alignment shifted instantly. Corporate executives are driven by profit, but they are also terrified of public relations nightmares. A billionaire defending a helpless child from an abusive heiress was a narrative the public would love; an heiress attacking a child was a stock-market death sentence.

"The Cole-Vance merger is officially terminated," the senior board member announced, standing up and closing his folder. "Arthur, I suggest you and your daughter leave the building before our legal team files a formal countersuit for corporate espionage regarding the unauthorized photography inside the Cole residence."

Arthur Vance’s face was purple with rage. He grabbed his briefcase and stormed out, not even waiting for his daughter. Vanessa stood frozen for a second, looking at Ethan, then at Maya. The pristine, untouchable world she had built around herself had shattered in less than an hour.

"You'll regret this, Ethan," Vanessa whispered, her voice cracking with humiliation. "You’ve ruined everything for a servant."

"She isn't a servant, Vanessa," Ethan said, his voice echoing through the emptying room. "She’s the only person in my life who didn't have a price."

When the room cleared, leaving only Ethan, Maya, and Gerald, the silence returned, but it was a clean silence. The air felt lighter.

Gerald walked in, handing Leo back to Maya. The boy immediately wrapped his arms around her neck, sighing happily. "Good job, Mama."

Ethan looked at Maya, his eyes shining with something she hadn't seen before. "You risked everything for me today, Maya. You could have been sued, you could have been arrested if their lawyers were faster."

"I told you, Mr. Cole," Maya said, a faint smile touching her lips. "When you have a child, you lose the luxury of being afraid. And besides... you backed me up first."

Ethan rolled his chair closer to her, reaching out to touch Leo’s small, soft hand. "The media is going to be difficult for a few weeks. The story is still out there. But I want to make you a proposition, Maya. Not as an employer. As a man who needs help rebuilding his life from the ground up."

May you like

"What kind of proposition?"

"Let me be the safety net you and Leo haven't had," Ethan said softly. "Move out of the storage room. Move into the main estate. Not as staff. As my family."
