Chapter 3 - The War Room

By 8:00 a.m., the VIP suite on the ninth floor of Northwestern Memorial had been completely transformed into an command center.
While Claire rested, hooked to an IV drip, Julian’s personal security staff secured the entire floor. Access was restricted exclusively to medical personnel holding high-level clearance badges. Outside the hospital, a swarm of reporters and financial journalists had gathered, tipped off by the sudden, apocalyptic crash of Cross Meridian Development stock.
Inside the suite, Claire sat upright in bed, supported by plush pillows. Her face was still pale, but her eyes—the sharp, analytical green eyes that had once made corporate embezzlers tremble—were entirely clear.
On the table in front of her sat a secure tablet connected directly to the Vance Holdings financial network. Next to it was the crumpled, blood-stained page fourteen she had saved from Evan’s predatory contract.
"Look at the clause structure here," Claire said, pointing a slender finger at the screen as Arthur Pendelton and Julian stood over her. "Evan didn't set up the offshore entity through Cross Meridian. He used a shell company named 'Meridian Apex LLC', registered in Delaware, but routed through a grand cayman bank."
Arthur Pendelton blinked in surprise, leaning in closer. "We spent three hours tracing those funds, Mrs. Cross. How did you spot the Cayman link so quickly?"
"Because Evan isn't creative," Claire said, a cold, bitter smile touching her lips. "In 2019, when we were first married, he tried to hide a twelve-million-dollar land acquisition in Naperville using the exact same naming convention. He thinks changing the jurisdiction obscures the beneficial ownership. But he always leaves his primary signature code on the incorporation filings: EC-77."
Julian, who was standing by the window sipping black coffee, turned around. A faint spark of pride burned in his grey eyes.
"She was the lead auditor on the Enron sub-investigations at twenty-six, Arthur," Julian said quietly. "Don't underestimate her."
"I certainly won't again," Arthur said respectfully, updating the legal brief on his tablet. "With this connection verified, we can file an emergency injunction in Cook County Chancery Court by 10:00 a.m. We can freeze all personal assets held by Evan Cross, including his offshore accounts, under the Illinois Uniform Fraudulent Transfer Act."
"Do it," Claire said without a moment’s hesitation.
For six years, she had suppressed her sharp intelligence to make Evan feel larger, stronger, more dominant. She had muted her own brilliant mind to fit into the box of the supportive corporate wife. Now, the mother in her—the woman whose child was currently fighting in an incubator downstairs—felt no mercy.
"What about Felicity Grant?" Claire asked, looking at Julian.
"Her communications firm was retained by Cross Meridian on a retainer of fifty thousand dollars a month," Julian replied, setting his coffee cup down. "Paid directly out of the account Evan stole from your mother’s trust. My team has already sent a formal demand letter to her firm for civil conspiracy and conversion of stolen funds. Her personal bank accounts were frozen twenty minutes ago."
Claire felt a strange, cold sense of clarity. "She was wearing my bracelet."
"It’s already been recovered," Julian said simply.
Claire looked at him, startled. "What?"
Julian took a small velvet box from his coat pocket and placed it gently on the table beside her. Claire opened it. Inside lay the diamond bracelet—the one Evan had gifted her five years ago, and the one Felicity had worn so proudly in the hospital room hours before.
"My security team met Miss Grant in the lobby of her apartment building at seven this morning," Julian said, his tone entirely casual, as if discussing the weather. "They politely informed her that wearing stolen property tied to an active federal financial investigation carried immediate accomplice liability. She surrendered it without argument."
Claire looked at the sparkling diamonds, then closed the box with a soft snap. "I don't want it. Sell it and donate the proceeds to the hospital’s neonatal unit."
Julian’s lips twitched into a rare, genuine smile. "Consider it done."
A soft knock at the door interrupted them. Dr. Patel stepped inside, smiling warmly.
"Mrs. Cross? The pediatric team has stabilized your daughter’s oxygen levels. She’s awake, and if you feel strong enough, we can wheel you down to the NICU to hold her for the first time."
Claire’s breath caught in her throat. The legal battle, the millions of dollars, the destruction of Evan’s empire—all of it faded into absolute insignificance.
"Yes," Claire whispered, her voice trembling. "Please. Now."
Julian immediately stepped forward, motioning for the medical transport chair. He didn't offer to carry her—he knew her pride—but he extended a steady, strong arm for her to lean on as she carefully maneuvered herself out of the bed.
As Claire stood, a sharp pang of pain shot through her incision, and she stumbled slightly.
Instantly, Julian’s strong hands caught her waist, supporting her weight with complete, effortless strength. For a fraction of a second, her chest was pressed against his broad shoulder. She could smell his familiar, intoxicating scent—sandalwood, rain, and cold steel.
Claire looked up, her eyes meeting his. They were inches apart.
"I’ve got you," Julian whispered, his voice thick with an emotion he couldn't entirely hide. "I’ve always got you, Claire."
Claire’s heart hammered in her chest, not from fear, but from a sudden, overwhelming realization of how safe she felt in his arms—a feeling she had denied herself for seven long years.
"Thank you, Julian," she whispered back softly.
He helped her gently into the wheelchair, his touch lingering on her shoulder for a brief second before he stepped back, allowing Dr. Patel to wheel her out of the room.
Julian followed close behind, his posture tall, imposing, and completely protective. As they walked through the secure double doors toward the elevator, Arthur Pendelton leaned in toward Julian.
"Mr. Vance," Arthur whispered urgently. "Evan Cross just arrived at the courthouse with his lead attorneys. He’s calling an emergency press conference on the courthouse steps for 11:00 a.m. He claims you are orchestrating a hostile corporate takeover using his wife’s medical condition as leverage."
May you like
Julian didn't even turn his head. His eyes remained locked on Claire’s dark hair as she was wheeled ahead of him.
"Let him speak," Julian said coldly. "Give him all the rope he needs. And tell our media team to release the security footage of him in Claire’s hospital room at 2:13 a.m. right when he steps up to the microphone."
