Chapter 5 - The Public Execution

At 11:00 a.m., the stone steps of the Daley Center in downtown Chicago were packed with over fifty news crews, photographers, and financial journalists.
Evan Cross stood behind a wooden podium, flanked by three high-priced criminal defense attorneys and Felicity Grant, who was trying desperately to hide her flushed, anxious face behind oversized sunglasses.
Evan adjusted his microphone, forcing a look of deep, grief-stricken sincerity onto his face for the flashing cameras.
"Members of the press," Evan began, his voice laced with practiced emotion. "I stand before you today not just as the CEO of Cross Meridian Development, but as a devastated husband and father. Last night, my beloved wife went into unexpected, high-risk labor with our first child. While I was at her bedside, praying for her survival, a ruthless corporate predator launched a illegal, unprovoked financial assault against my company."
Camera shutters clicked frantically. Evan leaned closer to the microphones, warming up to his performance.
"Julian Vance and Vance Holdings are using my personal family tragedy to manufacture a false financial crisis!" Evan shouted, pointing a finger dramatically at the cameras. "They have shorted our stock, intimidated our lenders, and spread malicious lies about our financial integrity—all to force a distressed sale of Cross Meridian! I call upon the Securities and Exchange Commission and the United States Attorney to launch an immediate investigation into Julian Vance’s predatory, unethical behavior!"
The reporters immediately raised their hands, shouting questions all at once.
"Mr. Cross! Is it true your wife’s health insurance was canceled at midnight?"
"Mr. Cross! What is the status of your municipal bond offering?"
Evan raised his hands smoothly, controlling the room. "My wife’s coverage issue was a clerical administrative error caused by a third-party vendor, which I am personally resolving. My commitment to my family is absolute—"
Suddenly, the massive digital news billboard directly across the street from the courthouse—a billboard owned by a subsidiary of Vance Holdings—flickered black.
The chatter of the crowd died down as hundreds of heads turned toward the multi-story screen.
A video feed began to play.
It was black-and-white, high-definition security footage with crisp, clear audio, timestamped 2:13 AM - Northwestern Memorial Hospital - Room 408.
The audio echoed loudly across the concrete plaza through heavy directional speakers installed on the street corners:
“If you want our daughter to have a private NICU room,” Evan’s recorded voice boomed over the crowd, crisp and horrifyingly clear, “sign the papers.”
On the massive screen, the crowd watched as Evan threw the legal document onto his bleeding wife’s legs. They saw Felicity Grant standing beside him, wearing the diamond bracelet. They heard Evan coldly declare: “Your coverage is gone... You’re thirty-three weeks pregnant. You’re bleeding... I am offering you a solution.”
The entire plaza fell into a dead, horrifying silence.
Evan’s face drained of every ounce of color. His jaw dropped open as he stared up at the giant screen displaying his monstrous behavior to the entire city of Chicago. Beside him, Felicity covered her face and stumbled backward toward the courthouse doors.
Before Evan could speak, the double glass doors of the courthouse opened.
Julian Vance stepped out into the crisp afternoon air.
He was flanked by the Chief of the FBI’s Financial Crimes Division, the District Attorney of Cook County, and two uniformed federal marshals. Julian walked down the steps with slow, deliberate grace, his hands resting casually in his suit pockets.
The reporters went wild, shoving microphones toward Julian as he halted ten feet from Evan’s podium.
"Mr. Vance! Mr. Vance! Do you have a response to Mr. Cross’s allegations?" a reporter screamed.
Julian didn't look at the reporter. His cold, grey eyes locked onto Evan Cross, who was trembling, visibly sweating through his bespoke suit.
"Evan Cross," Julian said, his voice quiet, yet carrying over the silent crowd through the ambient news mics. "At 8:00 a.m. today, the Federal Bureau of Investigation executed a search warrant on the headquarters of Cross Meridian Development."
Evan’s eyes widened in sheer horror. "You... you can’t do that..."
"We found sixteen offshore accounts containing over ninety million dollars stolen from Claire Bennett’s maternal estate," Julian continued, taking a step closer to Evan. "We also found evidence of bank fraud, wire fraud, tax evasion, and corporate extortion."
The District Attorney stepped forward, pulling a signed document from his briefcase.
"Evan Cross," the DA announced loudly. "You are under arrest for grand larceny, corporate fraud, and felony extortion. Put your hands behind your back."
The two federal marshals stepped forward, grabbing Evan’s arms and forcing him down against the very podium he had been speaking from. The cold metallic click of handcuffs echoed clearly over the rolling television cameras.
"Claire!" Evan screamed frantically as he was slammed against the wood, his polished facade completely shattered into pathetic, blubbering panic. "Claire! Tell them! Tell them it was a misunderstanding! Claire!"

Julian stepped up to the podium, looking down at the handcuffed man with absolute, unyielding contempt.
"Claire isn't here, Evan," Julian said softly, leaning down to speak directly into Evan’s ear so only he could hear. "She’s with our daughter. And you will never, ever see either of them again."
