Chapter 7 - Shadows of the Past

Two weeks passed.
Under the intense, world-class care arranged by Julian, tiny Victoria grew stronger every day. Her weight had climbed to four pounds, eight ounces, and she was officially taken off the CPAP machine, breathing entirely on her own.
Claire’s physical recovery was equally remarkable. Her incision had healed, her strength had returned, and her brilliant mind was sharper than ever. She spent her days dividing her time between the NICU and reviewing the legal dissolution of her marriage.
However, peace was rarely a simple affair when billions of dollars were involved.
On a rainy Tuesday afternoon, Claire was sitting in the private hospital lounge reviewing a legal draft when Julian walked in, accompanied by Marcus Vance—his estranged elder brother and senior partner at Vance Global Syndicate.
Marcus Vance was fifty, gray-tempered, and possessed the same razor-sharp grey eyes as Julian, but without Julian’s warmth. Marcus had spent thirty years building the family’s international banking legacy, and he viewed every human relationship through the cold lens of a balance sheet.
"Claire," Julian said, his hand lightly resting on her shoulder as he introduced his brother. "This is Marcus."
Claire stood up, shaking Marcus’s cold hand. "Mr. Vance."
"Mrs. Cross," Marcus said, his voice flat and formal. He sat down across from her, unbuttoning his tailored suit coat. "I’ll speak plainly. My brother has deployed nearly two and a half billion dollars of our firm’s liquidity over the last fourteen days to secure your safety and dismantle your husband’s assets."
Claire’s posture straightened instantly. The forensic accountant inside her stood at full attention. "I am well aware of the scale of Julian’s intervention, Mr. Vance."
"Then you are also aware," Marcus continued, ignoring Julian’s warning glare, "that our board of directors in London is extremely concerned. Julian has merged several personal asset trusts with your late mother’s recovered estate to create a protective barrier around you and your infant. From an institutional standing, he has exposed Vance Holdings to significant liability."
"Marcus," Julian said, his voice dropping into a dangerous, icy register. "That is enough."
"No, Julian, it isn’t," Marcus snapped, turning to his younger brother. "You froze an entire commercial sector in Chicago for a woman who left you seven years ago! You put our family syndicate at risk for a child that isn't even yours!"
The air in the room instantly turned to liquid nitrogen.
Julian took a slow step forward, his fists clenching at his sides, his eyes blazing with an absolute, terrifying fury that made even his hardened elder brother flinch.
"Say one more word about her daughter, Marcus," Julian said, his voice barely above a whisper, yet radiating enough lethal intent to stop a heart. "And I will strip your voting shares from the syndicate before market close today."
"Julian, stop," Claire’s voice cut through the tension smoothly, strong and unshakeable.
She walked slowly around the table, standing directly between the two powerful brothers. She looked Marcus Vance straight in the eye without a single hint of intimidation.
"Mr. Vance," Claire said calmly. "You are concerned about the two point four billion dollars deployed by Vance Holdings. Let’s talk about that."
Marcus blinked, taken aback by her sudden, commanding presence.
"Julian purchased Cross Meridian’s distressed senior debt at forty cents on the dollar," Claire explained smoothly, her fingers tapping rhythmically on the table as if presenting a board report. "By liquidating their commercial holdings on Michigan Avenue and restructuring the municipal development rights through a clean subsidiary, Vance Holdings will yield a net profit of three hundred and twenty million dollars by Q3."
She took a step closer to Marcus.
"Furthermore, the recovery of my mother’s pharmaceutical patents—specifically the delivery mechanisms for Bennett Therapeutics—adds an estimated four hundred million dollars in commercial valuation to Vance Health’s portfolio. Julian didn't cost your syndicate a single penny. He executed the most profitable distressed-asset takeover in Chicago’s history while saving my life."
Marcus Vance sat in utter, speechless shock. He looked at Claire, then looked at Julian, who was standing behind her with a broad, insanely proud smirk on his face.
Claire leaned down, her green eyes burning with formidable intelligence. "So before you come into my room and question my worth or my daughter’s place, I suggest you go back to your board in London and read the audited numbers I personally verified this morning. Good day, Mr. Vance."
Marcus stared at her for three long seconds, then slowly stood up, adjusting his suit. He looked at Julian, a begrudging smile breaking through his stern facade.
"She’s sharper than your entire legal division, Julian," Marcus muttered, shaking his head. He turned back to Claire and gave a respectful nod. "My apologies, Mrs. Cross. It seems my brother chose far better than I realized."
As Marcus exited the room, Julian let out a low, deep laugh, stepping up behind Claire and sliding his arms around her waist, pulling her back against his broad chest.

"God, I missed your mind," Julian whispered against her ear, his lips softly brushing her skin, sending a violent shiver of pleasure down her spine.
Claire relaxed into his embrace, laying her head back against his shoulder. "I told you, Julian... nobody brings me a stupid contract. Or a stupid argument."
