Chapter 6 - The Fall of the Meridian

The arrest of Evan Cross sent seismic shockwaves through the global financial markets.
By 3:00 p.m., Cross Meridian Development stock had plunged by 94%, wiping out over one billion dollars in market cap in a single trading session. Board members resigned en masse, lenders seized company assets, and the city of Chicago officially revoked all municipal development contracts held by the firm.
In a cold, sterile holding cell at the Metropolitan Correctional Center, Evan Cross sat on a metal bench, his suit jacket removed, his tie hanging loose. His high-priced legal team sat across from him behind a thick glass partition.
"What do you mean I can’t get bail?" Evan yelled, slamming his hand against the counter. "I have no prior record! I am a prominent businessman!"
His lead attorney, a veteran criminal defense lawyer named Richard Sterling, sighed heavily, rubbing his temples. "Evan, the judge viewed the hospital security footage during the preliminary hearing. The District Attorney argued you are an extreme flight risk due to the hidden Cayman accounts Julian Vance handed over to the feds. The judge set your bail at fifty million dollars, cash only."
"Fifty million?!" Evan gasped, turning pale. "Pay it! Use the commercial assets on Michigan Avenue!"
"We can’t," Sterling said flatly. "Vance Holdings bought the primary debt notes on those properties at 1:00 p.m. today. They’ve already initiated foreclosure proceedings. Every asset you thought you owned has been frozen or seized to satisfy the ninety-million-dollar restitution claim filed by your wife’s legal team."
Evan sank back onto the metal bench, his breath coming in short, panicked gasps. "Felicity... call Felicity. She has access to the backup slush fund in Zurich—"
"Miss Grant was arrested two hours ago at O'Hare Airport trying to board a flight to London," Sterling interrupted coldly. "She is currently giving a full deposition to the Department of Justice in exchange for a plea bargain. She gave them all your passwords, Evan. It’s over."
Evan stared at the concrete floor, his mind spinning into a abyss of dark realization. In less than twelve hours, he had gone from a celebrated millionaire developer to a bankrupt, incarcerated felon.
"Julian Vance..." Evan whispered, his teeth grinding together in pure hatred. "How did he do this? How did he move that fast?"
"Julian Vance didn't just move fast, Evan," Sterling said, closing his briefcase with a sharp click. "He didn't sleep. He deployed two billion dollars of his personal capital to short your market positions and buy up your debt. He spent more money destroying you today than your entire company was worth."
Sterling looked at Evan with a cold, professional detachment. "A man doesn't do that for business, Evan. You attacked the woman he’s loved for a decade. You didn't just lose a financial battle... you invited a dragon into your house, and he burned you to ashes."
Meanwhile, on the top floor of Northwestern Memorial, the atmosphere was quiet, warm, and peaceful.
Claire was sitting up in an armchair near the window, wearing a comfortable silk robe. Victoria had been moved to a private room in the NICU, and Claire had just returned from another extended visit where she had been able to hold her tiny daughter skin-to-skin for the first time.
The door softly opened, and Julian walked in. He had removed his suit jacket, his sleeves rolled up to his elbows, revealing his muscular forearms. He looked exhausted, yet there was a deep, serene calm in his grey eyes.
"Is it done?" Claire asked softly.
Julian stepped into the room, setting a hot cup of chamomile tea on the table beside her. "Evan’s bail was set at fifty million. He can’t pay it. He’ll remain in federal custody pending trial."
Claire took a slow sip of the tea, looking out at the city lights glistening in the dark waters of Lake Michigan.
"I thought I would feel triumphant," Claire admitted softly, her voice carrying a delicate vulnerability. "Or angry. But honestly... I just feel free."
Julian stood beside her chair, looking down at her. "You are free, Claire. His debt is cleared. Your mother’s trust has been fully recovered and placed into an irrevocable trust for Victoria."
Claire turned her head to look up at him. "Julian... why did you do all of this? The money you spent, the market disruption... you risked your own firm’s reputation."
Julian looked into her green eyes, his composure finally breaking to reveal the raw, powerful devotion that had burned inside him for seven long years.
"I didn't risk anything that mattered to me," Julian said softly. "The only thing that ever mattered to me was walking into this room and knowing you and your child were safe."
Claire reached out, her hand gently taking his warm, large hand. This time, she didn't pull away. She squeezed his fingers softly.

"Stay with us, Julian," she whispered.
Julian’s thumb stroked the back of her hand with delicate tenderness. "I’m not going anywhere, Claire. Not tonight. Not ever again."
