Three weeks later, the crisp autumn air carried the scent of pine and woodsmoke around the secluded lake house two hours outside the city.
Kaylee sat on the porch rocking chair, the baby—named Leo, after the mentor who had protected her future—sleeping peacefully against her chest. The burns on her shoulder from the boiling milk were healing into faint silver lines, visible reminders of a war she had survived.
Mateo stepped out onto the wooden deck carrying two mugs of steaming coffee, sliding one onto the side table before wrapping a warm wool blanket around Kaylee's shoulders.
"How is he sleeping?" Mateo whispered, smiling down at the tiny face pressed against his wife.
"Like an angel who didn't spend his first day causing a federal investigation," Kaylee smiled softly, leaning into Mateo's side.
