Chapter 1 - The Shattered Illusion

The echo of the slap still bounced off the high, gilded ceilings of the Grand Palace Hotel when Garrett’s mother, Victoria Lawson, let out a screech like an injured hawk.

"You savage creature!" Victoria bellowed, her diamond-encrusted hands clutching her chest as if she were the victim of a physical assault. "Security! Where is security?! This trailer-park gutter rat just struck my son! Arrest her!"

Garrett remained frozen, his hand still pressed against his beet-red cheek. The sheer shock of what had just happened had rendered him speechless. For three years, I had been the docile, quiet, frugal wife who clipped coupons, bought my clothes from discount racks, and nodded timidly whenever his high-society friends made passive-aggressive comments about my background. He had believed he was my savior—the wealthy tech entrepreneur who had plucked a poor, nameless girl from obscurity and given her a taste of the good life.

He didn't know that every single dollar in his bank account, every luxury car in his garage, and every penny that funded his software company, Lawson Innovations, had originated from my family's private trust.

I turned my back on Garrett and knelt down beside my mother, Martha. The red, oozing scrape on her forehead was sickening, but the heartbreak in her tear-filled eyes was far worse.

"Evelyn... baby, please," my mother whimpered, her hands trembling as she tried to pull down her faded sweater to hide her scraped elbows. "Don't ruin your marriage over me. I'll go... I'll leave right now."

"You are not going anywhere, Mom," I said, my voice dangerously steady. I took off my cheap acrylic scarf and gently pressed it against her forehead to stop the bleeding. "You are the guest of honor here today. They are the ones who are leaving."

"Are you out of your mind?!" Garrett finally roared, stepping toward me, his face contorted in anger. The humiliating pain of the slap had broken his trance, replacing shock with explosive fury. "You humiliated me in front of the board of directors! In front of the press! In front of the mayor! You hit your husband over this worthless, incompetent old woman!"

Four hundred guests stood transfixed. Drinks were paused halfway to lips; whispers rippled through the sea of tuxedos and evening gowns like poison.

"I didn't hit my husband, Garrett," I said, standing up and towering over him with a presence he had never seen in me before. "I hit a parasite. A pathetic, arrogant coward who thinks kicking an elderly woman off a chair makes him a man."

"That's it!" Victoria screamed, marching up beside her son, her eyes bulging. "Garrett, throw her out! Call your lawyers! Strip her of everything! She leaves this marriage with nothing but the clothes on her back! We gave you a life, Evelyn! We fed you! We let you carry a Lawson heir!"

I looked at Victoria, then at Garrett. A small, cold laugh escaped my lips.

"You gave me a life?" I asked softly. "Garrett, do you remember three years ago when Lawson Innovations was forty-eight hours away from bankruptcy? Do you remember the anonymous angel investor who injected twelve million dollars into your seed round?"

Garrett blinked, taken aback by the sudden shift in topic. "What does that have to do with anything?! That was Aegis Capital! A top-tier venture firm!"

"And who do you think owns Aegis Capital?" I asked, stepping closer to him until I could smell the expensive cognac on his breath. "Who do you think authorized your company's bridge loans last month when your payroll bounced? Who pays the forty thousand dollars a month for this grand ballroom?"

Garrett frowned, a flicker of uneasy confusion crossing his eyes. "The firm... the managing director..."

"The managing director of Aegis Capital reports directly to the Board of Vance Global," I said, my voice slicing through the silent ballroom. "And Vance Global belongs entirely to me."

A collective gasp echoed across the room.

"Lies!" Victoria shrieked, though her voice lacked its previous conviction. "She’s insane! She’s making things up because she knows she’s going to be thrown on the street!"

"Is it a lie, Garrett?" I asked, pulling my phone from my purse. I dialed a number on speakerphone.

After two rings, a polished, authoritative voice echoed through the high-end speakers of the room.

"Good evening, Ms. Vance," said Julian Mercer, the legendary chief legal officer of Vance Global. "I have the legal team on standby. We monitored the event feed from the venue's security network. We witnessed the assault on your mother."

Garrett’s face drained of every drop of color. He knew Julian Mercer. Julian was a legal titan in San Francisco—a man whose presence usually meant a company was about to be liquidated or acquired by force.

"Julian," I said calmly, looking straight into Garrett's terrified eyes. "Freeze all capital lines to Lawson Innovations immediately. Revoke the executive credit accounts, seize the company assets pledged under the loan guarantees, and instruct security to clear out Garrett Lawson's personal office by midnight."

"Understood, Ms. Vance," Julian replied smoothly. "And regarding the personal trust funds and the mortgage on the Pacific Heights mansion?"

"Evict him," I said. "And file for an emergency divorce and a full restraining order against Garrett Lawson and Victoria Lawson."

Garrett dropped his glass of champagne. It shattered on the marble floor, splashing sparkling wine across his leather shoes.

"Evelyn..." Garrett gasped, his voice suddenly squeaky, all his bravado evaporating into thin air. "Evelyn, wait... what are you saying? Vance Global? You're... you're an heiress?"

"I'm not an heiress, Garrett," I said, offering him one final, icy glance. "I am the sole owner. And as of right now... you are completely broke."
