Chapter 4 - The Vultures Gather

Three days after the christening disaster, Garrett made his first move to fight back.
Driven by desperation and advised by a sleazy, high-profile tabloid lawyer named Richard Sterling, Garrett held an emergency press conference in front of the San Francisco City Hall.
I watched the live broadcast from the flat-screen TV in my living room, while my mother sat beside me, knitting a tiny blue sweater for baby Leo. Her forehead scrape had begun to heal, but the emotional scars left by three years of subtle degradation still lingered.
On the screen, Garrett stood behind a podium, wearing a rumpled, ill-fitting suit—a far cry from his usual tailored Italian silk. Beside him stood Victoria, dabbing her eyes with a handkerchief, pretending to be a frail, heartbroken mother.
"Members of the press," Richard Sterling announced pompously into the microphones. "My client, Mr. Garrett Lawson, has been the victim of a calculated, malicious conspiracy. For three years, his wife, Evelyn Vance, concealed her true identity, posing as a woman of modest means to entrap Mr. Lawson into a marriage under false pretenses!"
Sterling pounded his fist on the podium. "She manipulated his trust, infiltrated his company, and then, using her family’s immense corporate power, systematically destroyed Lawson Innovations overnight—all because of a minor family misunderstanding during a private religious ceremony!"
Garrett stepped up to the microphone, putting on his best act of a devasted, betrayed husband.
"I loved Evelyn," Garrett sniffled, looking directly into the cameras. "I gave her everything. I thought we were building a modest, honest life together. But she lied to me from day one. And now, she has stolen my son, seized my company, and left my mother and me homeless on the streets. I am appealing to the courts and to the public for justice! A woman should not be allowed to use her billions to destroy a man’s life just because her pride was wounded!"
The reporters erupted into a frenzy of questions, cameras flashing relentlessly.
My mother looked at the screen, her knitting needles stopping in her hands. "Evelyn... people are going to believe him. They're going to think you're a monster."
"Let them think whatever they want for the next two hours, Mom," I said, smiling gently. "Because at two o'clock, we hold our own press conference."
At 2:00 P.M., the grand auditorium of the Vance Global corporate headquarters was packed to capacity. Every major news outlet in California was present, eager to see how the reclusive heiress of Vance Global would respond to her husband's public accusations.
I walked onto the stage dressed in a tailored navy-blue suit, flanked by Julian Mercer and two forensic accountants. I didn't bring a emotional sob story. I brought facts.
I stood behind the podium, looking out at the wall of cameras.
"Good afternoon," I said, my voice echoing clearly across the room. "Earlier today, Mr. Garrett Lawson claimed he was a victim of deceit and corporate sabotage. He claimed I destroyed his company over a 'minor misunderstanding.' Allow me to clarify the facts."
I pressed a clicker in my hand. Behind me, a giant high-definition screen lit up.
"This is the high-definition security footage from the Grand Palace Hotel ballroom three nights ago," I announced.
The video played in absolute, crystal-clear quality. The four hundred reporters in the room watched in real-time as Garrett Lawson verbally abused my mother, called her trash, and then deliberately, forcefully kicked the wooden leg of her chair, sending an elderly woman crashing hard onto the marble floor. The audio was razor-sharp, catching every cruel word Garrett and Victoria had spat.
Gasps filled the auditorium. The narrative Sterling had tried to build ruined in less than thirty seconds.
"That was not a misunderstanding," I said cold-bloodedly. "That was an assault on an innocent woman."
I clicked the button again. The screen changed to display financial spreadsheets, bank statements, and tax documents.
"Furthermore," I continued, "Mr. Lawson claimed I manipulated his company. The truth is that Lawson Innovations was never a profitable enterprise. Over the past thirty-six months, Mr. Lawson siphoned over four million dollars from company accounts to fund his mother's personal gambling debts, luxury shopping sprees, and high-stakes poker games in Las Vegas—all while failing to pay his engineers and lower-level staff."

I turned to face the cameras directly.
"I didn't destroy Garrett Lawson's life," I concluded. "I simply stopped paying for his lies."
