Chapter 5 - The Legal Trap

The fallout from my press conference was swift, brutal, and glorious.

By 5:00 P.M., public opinion had completely flipped. The video of Garrett kicking my mother’s chair went viral globally, racking up over fifty million views in less than twelve hours. Garrett Lawson became the most hated man on the internet, dubbed the "Chair-Kicking CEO."

Sponsors dropped him, his legal team abandoned him when they realized Vance Global was filing criminal charges for corporate embezzlement, and even the low-budget motel where he and Victoria were staying kicked them out after protesters gathered outside chanting for justice.

Two weeks later, the first formal court hearing took place at the San Francisco Superior Court.

Garrett sat at the defense table alone. He couldn't afford Richard Sterling anymore, so he was represented by a nervous, overworked public defender. His suit was stained, his hair was messy, and his eyes were bloodshot from sleepless nights.

Victoria sat in the gallery behind him, looking terrified, wearing a cheap coat she had bought at a thrift shop—the very same kind of clothes she had mocked my mother for wearing.

I sat at the plaintiff's table with Julian Mercer and a team of top-tier attorneys.

The judge, an imposing woman named Honorable Beatrice Vance (no relation, though known for her zero-tolerance policy toward domestic abuse and financial fraud), slammed her gavel down.

"We are here today regarding the matter of Vance v. Lawson," Judge Vance stated sternly. "We are addressing the petition for an emergency divorce, full custody of the minor child Leo Vance, an order of protection, and corporate restitution."

Garrett’s public defender stood up nervously. "Your Honor... my client acknowledges that tensions were high on the night in question. However, he is the biological father of the child and a legal co-owner of the marital assets. We request temporary joint custody and a freeze on the liquidation of Lawson Innovations assets until a fair division can be made."

Julian Mercer stood up, buttoning his suit jacket.

"Your Honor," Julian said calmly. "We have submitted forensic evidence showing that Mr. Lawson committed willful embezzlement of funds from entities owned by Vance Global. Furthermore, we have provided video evidence and medical reports establishing physical assault against the petitioner’s mother in the presence of the minor child."

Julian handed a blue folder to the bailiff, who passed it to the judge.

"In addition," Julian continued, "we have documented evidence that Mr. Lawson and his mother, Victoria Lawson, have made repeated harassing phone calls and public threats against Ms. Vance over the past fourteen days."

Judge Vance reviewed the documents, her eyebrows furrowing deeper with every page she turned. Her face grew darker and darker until she finally set the papers down and glared at Garrett.

"Mr. Lawson," Judge Vance said, her voice dripping with severe disdain. "I have viewed the video from the Grand Palace Hotel. Your behavior was not only disgraceful, it was criminal. To kick a chair out from underneath an elderly woman and then mock her injuries demonstrates a severe lack of moral character."

"Your Honor, please!" Garrett broke down, jumping up from his seat. "I was set up! She lied to me about who she was! She tricked me into thinking she was poor!"

"Silence!" Judge Vance slammed her gavel down with thunderous force. "Ms. Vance’s financial background does not give you license to commit assault, fraud, and emotional abuse!"

The judge adjusted her glasses and signed the decree sitting in front of her.

"It is the order of this court that Evelyn Vance is granted full legal and physical custody of Leo Vance, with zero visitation rights granted to Garrett Lawson pending a full psychological evaluation," Judge Vance declared firmly. "A permanent restraining order is issued against Garrett Lawson and Victoria Lawson, requiring them to stay at least one thousand yards away from Ms. Vance, her child, her family, and her places of employment."

Garrett collapsed back into his chair, burying his face in his hands, weeping hysterically.

"As for the financial matters," the judge added, eyeing Garrett like a bug beneath her shoe, "the court finds that Mr. Lawson acquired zero equity in Vance Global, and all corporate assets of Lawson Innovations are hereby surrendered to Aegis Capital to satisfy outstanding debts. Case closed."

The gavel struck the block. Bang.

It was over. In less than twenty minutes, Garrett had lost his family, his child, his business, and his freedom.
