Chapter 7 - Behind Bars

The trial of Garrett Lawson and Victoria Lawson was short, decisive, and covered endlessly by global media.

Faced with overwhelming physical evidence, corporate financial records, high-definition security footage, and the botched armed extortion attempt at Vance Global headquarters, the defense had zero ground to stand on.

Two months later, the jury returned with a unanimous verdict in less than forty-five minutes.

Garrett Lawson was convicted of corporate embezzlement, felony grand larceny, armed extortion, assault with a deadly weapon, and felony violation of a restraining order. He was sentenced to sixteen years in Pelican Bay State Prison without the possibility of parole for the first ten years.

Victoria Lawson was convicted of felony conspiracy, aiding and abetting extortion, and criminal trespassing. She was sentenced to five years at the California Institution for Women in Corona.

On the day of their final sentencing, I attended the courtroom dressed in a simple, elegant white coat. My mother sat beside me, wearing a lovely, hand-knitted lavender sweater—looking radiant, healthy, and entirely at peace.

As the bailiffs led Garrett away in orange jumpsuit and ankle chains, he stopped for a brief second beside the gallery rail.

He looked at my mother. The arrogance that had once defined him was completely dead. In its place was an empty, hollow shell of a man who realized he had traded a lifetime of love, wealth, and family for a moment of cruel vanity.

"Martha..." Garrett croaked, his voice raw, his eyes bloodshot. "I'm... I'm sorry."

My mother looked at him quietly. She didn't spit on him. She didn't yell. She didn't mock his chains.

"I forgive you, Garrett," my mother said softly, her voice filled with quiet grace. "Because holding onto hatred for you isn't worth a second of my time."

Garrett flinched as if she had struck him. Her forgiveness hurt far worse than any insult ever could. It proved that she was infinitely superior to him in every way that truly mattered.

The guards yanked his chains, dragging him through the heavy metal doors, which slammed shut behind him with a loud, final CLANG.
