Chapter 4 - The Rat in the Corner

When Celeste stepped out of the elevator, she was wearing a dark tailor-made suit and gold sunglasses, looking every bit the wealthy matriarch. But when she saw me standing beside Marcus in the glass-walled office, her composure wavered for a fraction of a second.

"Marcus," Celeste said smoothly, ignoring me entirely. "I need to discuss a private matter regarding our family's trust accounts."

"There are no private matters left, Celeste," Marcus replied sternly. "The federal authorities have already been notified. All Mercer and Aegis accounts are frozen."

Celeste froze. Slowly, she turned her head toward me. Her eyes were filled with an ancient, venomous rage. "You bitter, ungrateful little girl. We gave you a life. You were nothing until my son married you."

"I was a woman with integrity," I countered, taking a step toward her. "You took my husband, you took my home, and you forced me to rebuild myself from ashes. But you forgot one thing, Celeste: ashes don't burn."

"Daniel did what he had to do!" she shouted, her refined exterior finally shattering. "He wasn't strong enough to handle the pressure! If I hadn't stepped in, he would have ended up in prison five years ago!"

"So you put him in a golden cage instead," I said. "You bought him a new name, a new wife, and a new child, all paid for with stolen money. But you couldn't buy his freedom. Because every time he looks in the mirror, he knows he's just a dead man living on his mother's leash."

Behind us, the elevator chimed again.

Two tall men in dark suits stepped out, accompanied by Deputy Attorney General Thomas Sterling—my former mentor.

"Celeste Mercer," Thomas said, pulling a folded warrant from his breast pocket. "You are under arrest for federal bank fraud, wire fraud, conspiracy, and insurance fraud. You have the right to remain silent."

As the steel handcuffs clicked around Celeste’s manicured wrists, she looked at me over her shoulder. "You've ruined everything," she hissed.

"No," I replied softly. "I just closed the audit."
