Chapter 6 - Cornered Predators

The following weeks were a whirlwind of legal proceedings, media storms, and corporate restructuring. The story of the "Resurrected Husband" exploded across local and national news outlets.

Because of my whistleblowing, the insurance companies initiated immediate recovery actions. The twelve million dollars—plus accrued interest—was seized from the Cayman trusts. The Mercer family estate was put up for auction to cover unpaid debts and court fines.

One evening, a month after the arrests, my phone rang while I was working late in my apartment.

It was Sophie Grant.

"Elena?" her voice was hesitant, small, and exhausted. "I... I know I'm the last person you want to hear from. But I need to ask you something."

I set my pen down. "Go ahead, Sophie."

"I'm cooperating with the prosecutor," she said, her voice cracking. "I surrendered all the deeds and accounts David... I mean, Daniel... put in my name. But I need to know... did he ever love me? Or was I just part of the cover story?"

My heart ached slightly for her. She was an innocent bystander swept into a family’s toxic web of deception.

"Sophie," I said gently, "Daniel is a man who uses people to shield himself from reality. He used his mother’s money, he used my grief, and he used your warmth to build a life he didn't earn. Don't waste your life wondering if a fake man genuinely loved you. Focus on your child. Give that baby a life built on truth."

On the other end of the line, I heard Sophie let out a long, ragged sob—a sound of painful release.

"Thank you, Elena," she whispered. "Thank you for saving me before he dragged us down any deeper."
