Chapter 9 - The Final Collapse

With the trial concluded and the ghosts finally laid to rest, I returned to the cemetery where I had buried the empty casket five years ago.

The autumn leaves were falling, blanketing the manicured green lawn in shades of gold and bronze. I walked down the familiar gravel path until I reached the polished black granite headstone bearing the name Daniel Mercer.

A court order had already been issued to remove the headstone and exhuming the empty casket to formally clear the city records. Two workers were waiting quietly nearby with equipment.

I stood before the stone for a long time.

For years, this spot had been a monument to my broken heart, a place where I had poured out tears, questions, and agonized pleas to an empty sky.

Now, looking at it, I felt no pain. No anger. No grief.

Only absolute, unshakeable freedom.

"Goodbye, Daniel," I said softly to the cold stone. "You were never the man I thought you were. But the woman I became because of you... she is unstoppable."

I nodded to the workers. As the heavy machinery roared to life to remove the stone, I turned my back and walked away, never looking back.
