Chapter 8 - Sophie’s Reckoning

Two days later, the jury returned with their verdict after less than three hours of deliberation.
Guilty on all counts.
Celeste Mercer was sentenced to eighteen years in federal prison without the possibility of parole. Her arrogance and masterminding of the fraud left the judge with no inclination for leniency.
Daniel Mercer received ten years for his active participation in the fraud and identity theft, his reduced sentence reflecting his eventual guilty plea and cooperation in dismantling his mother's offshore networks.
After the sentencing was read, I met Sophie outside the courthouse steps. She was holding her seven-month-old daughter in a baby carrier.
"How are you holding up?" I asked her as the afternoon breeze blew through the plaza.
"Relieved," Sophie admitted, a quiet, genuine smile touching her lips. "I filed for an annulment. The court granted full custody of Maya to me. I'm moving back to my hometown in Vermont next week to open a small accounting practice."
"That sounds wonderful, Sophie."
She looked at me, her eyes bright with admiration. "You gave me my life back, Elena. If you hadn't walked into that nursery, I would still be living a lie."
