Chapter 2 - The Shadows of Vance Hospitality

By nine o'clock that evening, the Oceanic Monarch was gliding smoothly through the dark waters of the Atlantic. The rooftop dining deck was filled with fairy lights, ambient jazz music, and wealthy passengers enjoying five-course seafood dinners.

In the VIP suite on the top floor, Victoria sat on the edge of the king-sized bed, her phone pressed tightly to her ear. Her manicured nails were bitten down, and her hands were shaking violently.

"Eleanor, you need to answer me right now!" Victoria hissed into the phone, keeping her voice barely above a whisper. "She's here! Clara is on the ship!"

On the other end of the line, sitting in her pristine, white-marbled mansion in the wealthy suburbs of Chicago, Eleanor Vance—Alexander's formidable mother and the matriarch of the Vance hotel dynasty—swirled a glass of white wine.

"Victoria, calm yourself," Eleanor said, her voice dropping into a stern, commanding tone. "What do you mean she's on the ship? Clara is a nobody. She vanished five years ago."

"She’s the Guest Experience Director on the yacht, Eleanor!" Victoria choked out, standing up and pacing across the plush carpet. "And that's not all... she has a child. A five-year-old boy named Liam."

Silence fell over the phone line. For three long seconds, Eleanor Vance said nothing.

"A boy?" Eleanor finally asked, her voice losing its icy composure, replaced by a sudden, sharp edge. "Did Alexander see him?"

"He saw him! He saw the silver locket, Eleanor! The kid has his face! He has the dimple! Alexander is losing his mind! He canceled our rooftop engagement dinner! He's been down in the purser's office for two hours demanding to review the ship's passenger and crew manifests!" Victoria wiped a tear from her cheek. "Eleanor, if Alexander finds out what we did five years ago... if he finds out about the medical reports... he will destroy us both!"

"Listen to me very carefully, Victoria," Eleanor commanded, her voice turning as cold as iron. "Alexander knows nothing. The medical records from Chicago General were permanently sealed. The private investigator we hired five years ago was paid off with two hundred thousand dollars. As far as Alexander knows, Clara was unfaithful and signed those divorce papers voluntarily."

"But the boy—"

"The boy proves nothing without a DNA test," Eleanor interrupted coldly. "And Clara will never agree to a DNA test because she knows what I will do to her if she comes near my family again. I will file an emergency petition for sole custody based on her financial instability and wipe her out in court. Clara knows that. That's why she ran."

"Eleanor, you don't understand!" Victoria cried out. "Alexander isn't listening to logic anymore! He's looking at her like... like he used to look at her before we set the trap! If he talks to her alone tonight—"

"Then make sure he doesn't talk to her alone," Eleanor ordered. "I am boarding a private charter flight to Key West right now. I will be at the marina when the yacht docks tomorrow morning. Do not let Alexander out of your sight. Do you understand me, Victoria?"

"I... I understand," Victoria whispered.

Victoria hung up the phone and pressed her hands against her face, trying to stop her trembling.

What Alexander didn't know—what no one in Chicago knew—was that five years ago, Victoria hadn't just been Alexander’s ambitious assistant. She had been Eleanor Vance’s embedded spy inside Alexander’s life.

When Clara became pregnant five years ago, she had taken a home test and immediately booked a private appointment at a clinic downtown. But Victoria, who managed Alexander’s schedule and mail, intercepted the clinic’s confirmation call. She had immediately reported it to Eleanor.

Eleanor Vance, terrified that a middle-class girl with no corporate pedigree would secure a permanent anchor into the multi-million-dollar Vance fortune, had orchestrated a devastating trap. They forged medical records suggesting Clara had been seeing a former college boyfriend, planted fake hotel receipts in Clara’s purse, and presented Alexander with "irrefutable proof" that his wife was cheating on him.

At the same time, Eleanor visited Clara privately at their apartment while Alexander was away on a business trip in London. Eleanor presented Clara with a terrifying ultimatum: sign the uncontested divorce papers and leave Chicago forever, or Eleanor would use the Vance family’s immense legal power to frame Clara for corporate espionage at Vance Hospitality, ensuring she spent her pregnancy behind bars.

Terrified for her unborn child’s safety, broken-hearted that Alexander hadn't come home to defend her, Clara had signed the papers and vanished.

Now, five years later, the truth was sailing toward the light.
