Chapter 7 - The Road to Chicago

Twenty-four hours later, the private corporate jet belonging to Vance Hospitality was cruising smoothly at thirty-thousand feet above the Midwest, heading toward Chicago.
Inside the luxurious leather-lined cabin, the quiet hum of the jet engines was the only sound.
Liam was fast asleep on the wide plush sofa near the back of the cabin, wrapped in a soft cashmere blanket, holding a small wooden toy airplane Alexander had bought for him at the airport terminal.
In the front dining area of the jet, Clara sat across from Alexander at a mahogany table. Two untouched cups of coffee rested between them.
Clara looked out the window at the ocean of white clouds below, her mind spinning with the dizzying speed at which her life had changed over the last forty-eight hours. Two days ago, she had been a Guest Experience Director preparing for a routine weekend cruise. Today, she was sitting on a private jet returning to the city she had fled in terror five years ago.
"You don't have to be afraid, Clara," Alexander said gently, reaching across the table to touch her fingers softly. "My mother has been completely removed from Vance Hospitality. Arthur Pendelton executed the corporate proxy vote at noon today. Her access to the company, the family estates, and the board has been legally terminated."
Clara looked at his hand resting over hers. His touch was warm, familiar, and filled with a quiet strength that made her feel safe for the first time in half a decade.
"I'm not afraid of Eleanor anymore, Alexander," Clara said softly, turning her hand to weave her fingers through his. "I was afraid five years ago because I was alone. I had no money, no family, and a baby growing inside me. I thought if I fought her, she would take my baby away or put me in prison."
"She will never hurt you again," Alexander swore, his eyes burning with absolute devotion. "I’ve spent the last five years living in a ghost house, Clara. I thought I was working for a future, but without you, there was no future. It was just work and empty noise."
"What happens now, Alexander?" Clara asked, her green eyes searching his face. "We aren't the same people we were five years ago. I am not the quiet girl who sits at home waiting for you to finish fourteen-hour workdays. I built a life for Liam. I built a career."
Alexander smiled—a real, genuine smile that lit up his eyes, making him look five years younger.
"I don't want the quiet girl who sits at home, Clara," Alexander murmured, lifting her hand to his lips and pressing a gentle kiss against her knuckles. "I want the fierce, beautiful, incredible woman who raised my son. I want to build a real home with you. Not a corporate showcase, not a house my mother decorated... a real home."
He leaned forward, looking into her eyes. "I know I have to earn your trust back, Clara. I know I failed you five years ago when I didn't see through my mother’s lies. I don't expect you to forgive me overnight. All I ask... is that you give me a chance to be a father to Liam, and a chance to show you who I really am."
Clara looked back toward the rear of the cabin, where their son was sleeping peacefully. She remembered the five long years of cold nights, working double shifts on cruise ships, trying to give Liam everything he deserved while carrying the heavy ache of a broken heart.

Then she looked at Alexander—at the man who had risked his company, publicly disowned his mother, and dropped to his knees on a public pier just to hold his son’s hand.
"You don't have to earn my trust, Alexander," Clara whispered, a soft, beautiful smile breaking across her face. "You already did when you stood between us and those guards."
