Chapter 6 - The Shield of a Father

The wooden pier went dead silent. A few passing tourists paused, sensing the sudden, dangerous tension, but Eleanor’s private security guards stepped forward, waving them along and blocking the entrance to the pier.
Clara felt the ground beneath her feet give way. The nightmare was repeating itself. Five years ago, Eleanor had stood in her living room with legal papers, threatening to destroy her life. Now, she was standing on a pier in Key West, trying to steal her son.
"You can't do this..." Clara gasped, tears of terror brimming in her eyes as she pulled Liam close to her chest. "He is my son! I raised him! You have no right!"
"I have every right!" Eleanor declared, her voice rising with tyrannical authority. "He is a Vance! He carries my late husband's blood! He will not be raised on steamships and in rented apartments by a woman who couldn't even keep a marriage together!"
Eleanor nodded to her two security guards. "Take the boy to the limousine."
The two heavy-set security guards stepped forward, reaching out toward Liam.
"Touch him," Alexander’s voice rang out, "and I will kill you where you stand."
The security guards froze.
Alexander stepped forward, stepping directly into the path of the guards. His face was contorted with a fury so intense, so raw, that even Eleanor took a step back in surprise. Alexander had always been a dutiful son. He had respected his mother’s business acumen, relied on her counsel, and allowed her to influence his life.
He had never looked at her with pure, unadulterated hatred.
Until now.
"Alexander, move out of the way," Eleanor commanded, trying to maintain her stern posture. "I am doing this for you! I am fixing the mistake you made five years ago!"
"The only mistake I made five years ago, Mother," Alexander said, his voice terrifyingly calm, "was allowing you to breathe the same air as my wife."
Eleanor’s face paled. "Alexander! How dare you speak to me like that?!"
Alexander walked straight up to his mother, standing inches from her face, towering over her.
"I know everything, Eleanor," Alexander whispered, using her first name for the very first time in his life. "I know about the forged medical records. I know about the threats you made in Clara’s kitchen. I know you paid off the private investigators. I know you used Victoria to delete Clara’s emergency calls while she was losing blood in a Chicago hospital."
Eleanor’s hands began to tremble. She looked at her two lawyers, who suddenly looked very uncomfortable, stepping back slightly.
"I... I did it to protect the company!" Eleanor stammered, her regal mask finally cracking, exposing the desperate, controlling woman beneath. "She was wrong for you, Alexander! She was weak! She would have ruined your corporate standing!"
"She wasn't weak," Alexander said, tears of grief and anger filling his eyes. "She was strong enough to protect my son from a monster like you for five years."
Alexander reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a sleek silver smartphone. He unlocked the screen and held it in front of Eleanor’s face.
Displayed on the screen was a live video conference with Arthur Pendelton—the managing partner of Chicago’s largest corporate law firm, and the legal director of Vance Hospitality’s Board of Directors.
"Arthur has been listening to this entire conversation on speakerphone, Mother," Alexander revealed coolly.
Eleanor’s eyes widened in utter horror. "Arthur...?"
"As Chief Executive Officer and majority shareholder of Vance Hospitality," Alexander announced into the phone, "I hereby call an emergency board meeting for two PM today. My first motion will be the total removal of Eleanor Vance from the Board of Directors, the revocation of her corporate trust accounts, and the execution of a permanent corporate restraining order barring her from all Vance properties nationwide."
"Alexander, no!" Eleanor shrieked, reaching out to grab his arm. "You can't do this! I am your mother! I built that company with your father!"
"And you used it to destroy my family," Alexander said, his voice as cold and final as a slammed coffin lid.
He turned to his mother’s two security guards and attorneys. "If any of you step within ten feet of my wife or my son again, Arthur will have federal warrants issued for child abduction and corporate conspiracy before the sun sets today. Get off my pier."
The two attorneys immediately turned around and walked briskly toward the limousine. The security guards hesitated for a second, then followed, leaving Eleanor standing alone on the wooden planks, her white linen suit rumpled in the humid Florida heat, her empire collapsing around her feet.
Alexander turned back to Clara and Liam.
He didn't look at his mother again as she began to weep hysterical, angry tears behind him. He walked over to Clara, dropped to one knee in front of Liam, and reached out his hand.
"Liam," Alexander said softly, his slate-blue eyes shining with tears. "My name is Alexander. I am your daddy."
Liam looked at his mother. Clara looked at Alexander—seeing the man who had just torn down his own empire, defied his powerful mother, and stood as a shield between them and the world.
Clara gave a small, tearful nod.
Liam stepped forward and placed his small hand into Alexander’s large, warm palm. "My mommy said you were looking for us."

Alexander pulled his son into a deep, crushing embrace, burying his face in the boy’s neck, weeping openly on the sunny pier of Key West.
"I was, Liam," Alexander choked out. "And I'm never letting you go again."
