Chapter 8 - The Truth Exposed

Three days after returning to Chicago, a major corporate press conference was held at the grand ballroom of the Vance Plaza Hotel downtown.

Dozens of news reporters, business journalists, and camera crews filled the room, their flashbulbs flashing continuously. The sudden removal of Eleanor Vance from Vance Hospitality had sent shockwaves through the Midwest real estate community, and rumors of corporate scandal had been circulating in the newspapers for forty-eight hours.

At ten o'clock sharp, Alexander stepped up to the podium wearing a tailored charcoal suit. Beside him walked Clara, stunning in an elegant navy-blue silk dress, her dark hair falling gracefully over her shoulders.

Alexander adjusted the microphone, looking out at the sea of reporters.

"Good morning," Alexander spoke, his deep voice commanding total silence in the grand ballroom. "Over the past forty-eight hours, there has been intense speculation regarding the sudden executive restructuring of Vance Hospitality and the removal of Mrs. Eleanor Vance from our Board of Directors."

The journalists leaned forward, microphones raised.

"Today, I am addressing the public directly to clear all speculation," Alexander continued, his posture regal, his hand reaching out to hold Clara’s hand tightly in front of the cameras. "Five years ago, my wife, Clara Vance, was subjected to a systematic, fraudulent conspiracy orchestrated by former board members to force her out of my life and out of this company."

Gasps rippled through the press corps. Cameras zoomed in on Clara’s face.

"During that time," Alexander revealed, his voice steady and uncompromising, "false legal threats, forged medical records, and corporate coercion were used to separate my wife from me while she was pregnant with our son, Liam. For five years, my family was deprived of the truth."

Alexander paused, taking a deep breath, looking straight into the primary news camera.

"As Chief Executive Officer of Vance Hospitality, I have turned over all evidence of these past fraudulent activities—including corporate wire fraud and illegal private surveillance—to the State Attorney General’s office," Alexander declared. "Full criminal and civil proceedings are now underway against all individuals involved, regardless of their family relations."

A barrage of shouted questions erupted from the reporters:

"Mr. Vance! Are you pressing charges against your own mother?!"

"Mrs. Vance! Will you be returning to the company as head of interior design?!"

"What is the status of your marriage?!"

Alexander stepped closer to the microphone, pulling Clara gently against his side.

"Clara Vance is returning to Vance Hospitality as Vice President of Global Design," Alexander announced proudly. "And as for our marriage... five years ago, a mistake was made. But today, my family is whole, my son is home, and the Vance legacy belongs to truth."

In a small, luxurious private nursing home in suburban Chicago, Eleanor Vance sat in a wheelchair watching the live television broadcast. Her face was pale, her fingers clutching the plastic armrests until her knuckles turned white as she watched her son publicly dismantle her social standing, announce criminal investigations into her allies, and place the girl she had despised at the helm of the company.

Eleanor slowly turned off the television screen, sitting alone in the quiet, gilded room, realizing that her reign over the Vance family had ended forever.
