Chapter 3 - The Frozen Accounts

By 10:00 AM, the State Attorney General’s Office had launched a full-scale federal investigation into the Dawson and Cole families.

Rachel, Marcus, and I sat in a private conference room at the Federal Building in downtown Denver. Across the table sat Assistant U.S. Attorney David Vance—a sharp, gray-haired prosecutor with a reputation for mercilessly dismantling white-collar crime syndicates.

The three steel lockboxes from the grave were spread out across the table, their contents being cataloged by federal agents in white gloves.

"Mrs. Dawson," Vance said, adjusting his glasses as he looked over the ledgers. "What we have here is extraordinary. Daniel Dawson and Arthur Cole didn't just steal your four-million-dollar insurance policy. For the past six years, they’ve been operating a fraudulent medical billing shell network across three states."

"How did my company fit into it?" I asked, leaning forward.

"Your logistics firm handled regional medical equipment transport," Vance explained, pointing to a series of shipping manifests pulled from the grave box. "Daniel forged your signature on third-party carrier agreements. He used your company’s fleet to log ghost shipments of high-end surgical equipment that never existed, generating tens of millions in fraudulent insurance rebates."

"And when the state audit began six years ago," Rachel added, "they realized the paper trail was leading straight to them. So they needed a scapegoat and a clean exit."

"Exactly," Vance nodded. "Daniel faked his terminal cancer, shifted three hundred thousand dollars of corporate liabilities onto your personal name, staged his death, and 'buried' the core ledgers in his own casket. He assumed you would go bankrupt, the logistics firm would dissolve, and the case would be closed forever."

"Instead, Claire kept the company alive," Marcus smiled quietly from the corner of the room. "She worked twenty-hour days, paid off the ghost debt, and stayed in Denver."

"Which was their fatal mistake," Vance said. "Yesterday afternoon, based on the grave evidence, we froze all domestic accounts associated with Lakeview Holdings, Cole Financial Services, and Margaret Dawson’s personal trusts. Over twelve million dollars in liquid assets have been locked."

My jaw dropped slightly. "Twelve million?"

"Twelve million," Vance confirmed. "And because the original capital was stolen from your logistics firm and your personal insurance policy, Mrs. Dawson... you are officially listed as the primary victim claimant. Once the criminal forfeiture proceedings are complete, those assets will be transferred directly to you."

Before I could fully process the news, a federal agent opened the conference room door and leaned in. "Mr. Vance, we have a situation in Boulder. Local law enforcement just reported movement at the Lakeview estate."

Vance stood up instantly. "Are they trying to run?"

"A moving truck pulled up twenty minutes ago," the agent reported. "Vanessa Cole and Margaret Dawson are loading luggage into an SUV. Daniel Dawson was just spotted boarding a private charter helicopter at a helipad five miles outside Boulder."

"He’s fleeing the country," Marcus said, jumping to his feet.

"Not on my watch," Vance barked, grabbing his jacket. "Issue an emergency air-traffic grounding order for all private charters in the county. Get the SWAT unit to that helipad now!"

I stood up beside Rachel. "I'm coming with you."

"Claire, it's dangerous—" Vance began.

"He stole five years of my life, Mr. Vance," I said, looking him dead in the eye. "I'm going."
