Chapter 5 - The Unraveling

The arrest at the helipad was only the first falling domino in a massive legal collapse.

Over the next two weeks, the Federal Bureau of Investigation systematically dismantled the entire Cole and Dawson network. Arthur Cole was arrested at his executive office in downtown Denver, charged with thirty-two counts of wire fraud, tax evasion, and conspiracy to commit murder-for-hire in connection with the mysterious death of a former auditor three years prior.

Dr. Robert Hayes—the disgraced doctor who had signed Daniel’s fake death certificate—was picked up at a border crossing in Texas, attempting to cross into Mexico with two hundred thousand dollars in cash tucked into the door panels of his car.

The story exploded across national news channels.

DEAD MAN WALKING: DENVER WIFE DISCOVERS 'DEAD' HUSBAND ALIVE WITH SECOND FAMILY AFTER FIVE-YEAR INSURANCE SCAM.

Every major newspaper covered the case. Photographs of Daniel in handcuffs were splashed across the front pages, right beside the photographs Marcus had taken at the airport.

I sat in my office at my logistics firm, watching a news broadcast on the wall-mounted television.

Rachel walked into the office, carrying a bottle of champagne and two glasses. She set them down on my desk and leaned against the edge.

"How are you holding up, Senior Partner?" Rachel asked with a warm smile.

"I'm surprisingly okay," I admitted, turning off the television. "It feels like a fever dream that finally broke. How are the forfeiture proceedings going?"

Rachel popped the cork on the champagne, pouring two golden glasses. "Better than expected. The court has officially approved the immediate transfer of twelve point eight million dollars from the frozen offshore accounts into your corporate account. You are officially the sole owner of Lakeview Holdings, the Boulder house, and all liquidated assets previously owned by Margaret Dawson."

I took a glass of champagne, staring at the bubbles rising to the top. "What about Vanessa Cole?"

"Vanessa’s attorneys are pushing for a plea deal," Rachel explained. "She claims she was kept in the dark about the full extent of the fraud, believing Daniel was legitimately divorced before they met. Whether that's true or not, her father’s firm has been completely wiped out. She’s selling her personal belongings to pay for her legal defense."

"And the little boy?" I asked softly. "Leo?"

Rachel’s expression softened. "The boy is innocent in all of this, Claire. He’s staying with Vanessa’s sister in Aspen for now."

I took a slow sip of the champagne. I thought about the little boy with Daniel’s gray eyes—the child who would grow up knowing his father was a federal convict who had faked his own death for money.

"I don't want the Boulder house, Rachel," I said firmly. "Sell it. Put twenty percent of the proceeds into a clean, irrevocable educational trust for that little boy. He shouldn't have to pay for his father's sins."

Rachel looked at me, her eyes shining with deep respect. "You have a remarkable heart, Claire Dawson."

"Claire Carter," I corrected smoothly, offering a small, confident smile. "I reclaimed my maiden name this morning."
