Chapter 7 - The Final Burial

Three weeks after the trial ended, a small, quiet gathering took place at St. Jude’s Cemetery.

The sun was warm, shining through the pine trees, casting long golden shadows over the manicured lawns.

A new headstone had been installed over the plot where the fake grave had once stood.

I stood before the granite marker alongside Rachel, Marcus, and my father, who had flown in from Chicago to stand by my side.

The old headstone bearing Daniel’s name had been completely removed, crushed into gravel by order of the court. In its place stood a simple, beautiful marble bench surrounded by fresh white rose bushes.

Engraved on the side of the marble bench were four simple words:

FAITH IN THE FUTURE.

I knelt down on the soft grass, placing a single white rose onto the stone seat.

For five years, white roses had meant grief, apology, and guilt. Today, the white rose meant closure.

"Are you ready, Claire?" my dad asked gently, stepping up beside me and placing his large, warm hand on my shoulder.

I stood up, brushing the dirt from my knees, looking at the peaceful garden we had created.

"I am, Dad," I smiled, wrapping my arm around his waist. "The ghost is finally gone."

"Where to now?" Marcus asked, stepping up with a smile, holding the keys to his car.

"To the office," I replied, my eyes shining with renewed purpose. "We have a new logistics branch opening in Seattle next month, and I have a company to run."
