Chapter 1 - The Shadows of Bethesda

The November wind howled off the Bethesda Terrace lake, carrying the sharp, icy scent of impending winter. I gripped the foam-covered handle of the triple stroller until my knuckles turned white. Beside me, the fountain choked on frozen water, its stone angel looming over us like a silent, indifferent witness.

"Maya, listen to me," Sebastian said, taking a single step closer. The polished leather of his bespoke Italian shoes crunched against the gravel. He moved with the calculated grace of a predator that had just realized it was caught in its own trap.

"I said stay back!" My voice didn't just sound frantic—it sounded raw, scraped thin by four years of desperate survival.

Clarissa Hart reached out, her long, manicured fingers clutching the sleeve of Sebastian’s charcoal wool coat. "Sebastian, darling, this is absurd. She's a nobody. Look at how she's dressed! Look at those children! You don't actually believe this ridiculous story, do you? She’s clearly looking for a payout now that our engagement announcement hit the Times—"

"Clarissa," Sebastian spoke without looking at her. His voice dropped to a register so low and dangerous that even the wind seemed to die down. "If you open your mouth again in the presence of my children, I will ensure your father’s firm loses every institutional account in Manhattan by close of business today."

Clarissa’s mouth snapped shut. Her face flushed a mottled, humiliated red, her eyes darting between Sebastian’s hardened profile and the three tiny faces staring back from the stroller.

Noah, always the observant one, pulled his fleece blanket higher over his nose. Ivy clutched her stuffed bunny, her big, round gray eyes darting between me and the tall man standing before us. But Owen—Owen remained frozen, his tiny chin lifted, mirroring the exact, arrogant tilt that Sebastian Vale had displayed in every corporate boardroom from New York to London.

"You knew," Sebastian repeated, his gaze locking back onto mine. The coldness in his eyes had burned away, replaced by something far more terrifying: a terrifying, glacial fury aimed at the world behind him. "My grandfather told you I threw you away."

"He didn't just tell me, Sebastian," I spat, tears burning hot against my freezing cheeks. "He handed me a copy of the divorce petition signed with your personal seal. He stood in the lobby of Vale Tower while two armed security guards physically removed me from the premises. I was twenty-two weeks pregnant. I bled on the subway ride back to my studio apartment because the stress triggered early contractions!"

A violent flinch ran through Sebastian’s massive frame. He looked as if I had driven a physical blade into his chest. "You... you bled?"

"I spent three weeks on bed rest in a homeless shelter because I couldn't pay rent!" I shouted, no longer caring about the tourists lingering near the terrace arcades, staring at the scene unfolding before them. "I worked three jobs once they were born! I washed dishes at a diner in Queens while my landlady watched them for minimum wage! Where were you, Sebastian? You were on the cover of Forbes! You were attending galas in Paris! You were building your precious empire!"

"I thought you left me," Sebastian whispered. The words sounded torn from his throat. "I came home to the apartment in Soho... all your clothes were gone. There was a signed agreement on the counter. My grandfather's attorneys showed me audio recordings... your voice... saying you were bored of playing house with a billionaire."

I stared at him, a bitter, hollow laugh escaping my lips. "An audio recording? I never spoke to your attorneys, Sebastian! I was at the clinic in Brooklyn getting an ultrasound!"

"AI deepfake," Sebastian muttered, his eyes clouding over as the pieces of a grotesque puzzle began to click together in his mind. "My grandfather hired an advanced AI audio synthetic firm two years before the technology went public. He used corporate intelligence software... he staged the entire thing."

"It doesn't matter how he did it!" I snapped, taking two steps back, pulling the stroller handle with me. "It's over! It's been four years! I don't want your money, Sebastian. I don't want your name. I survived without you, and my children don't need a father who let his family destroy his wife!"

I spun the stroller around, intent on running toward the Central Park West exit, but Sebastian was faster. He didn't touch me—he knew better—but he stepped directly into my path, his towering six-foot-four frame blocking the light of the setting sun.

"You are not going back to Queens, Maya," he said softly, though the authority in his tone was absolute.

"You can't hold me here!"

"I am not holding you," Sebastian replied, pulling a heavy obsidian smartphone from his coat pocket. He swiped the screen with a trembling thumb. "I am protecting you. Because if my grandfather finds out I saw these children today before I have my men around you, you won't make it to tomorrow morning."

My heart dropped into my stomach. "What are you talking about?"

"Arthur Vale didn't just hide my children from me, Maya," Sebastian said, his gray eyes shining with a lethal, unyielding light. "He kept them hidden because the Vale Family Trust stipulates that my firstborn child inherits eighty percent of the voting shares upon their fourth birthday. If I had no heirs, the voting control reverted entirely to my grandfather until his death."

May you like

He looked at Owen, then Ivy, then Noah.

"My grandfather stripped you of your life because he wanted to keep control of the empire," Sebastian said, his voice deadly calm. "And now that he knows you're alive... he will stop at nothing to make sure those children never reach January."
