Chapter 9 - The Final Trial

When Sebastian returned home that evening and read the ledger, the rage that consumed him was beyond anything I had ever seen. But instead of breaking things or shouting, he became terrifyingly silent.

He spent four hours in his study with the Federal District Attorney.

By the end of the week, the charges against Arthur Vale were upgraded to attempted multi-count aggravated murder, corporate fraud, and racketeering. The ninety-two-year-old patriarch, unable to withstand the weight of the federal indictment and the total public humiliation, suffered a massive stroke in his medical holding cell.

He survived, but he was left completely paralyzed, unable to speak, forced to spend the remainder of his life trapped inside his own mind in a high-security medical ward under twenty-four-hour federal guard.

The shadow that had hung over the Vale family for three generations was finally, permanently lifted.

Two months later, on a crisp, clear morning in early January, the penthouse was filled with the sound of laughter, popping balloons, and children's music.

It was the triplets' fourth birthday.

The living room was transformed into a massive winter wonderland, filled with towering toy trains, giant stuffed animals, and three massive birthday cakes shaped like a dinosaur, a unicorn, and a race car.

Sarah, my best friend from Queens who had stayed by my side during those dark years, was sitting on the sofa, laughing as Owen tried to feed a giant teddy bear a piece of chocolate cake.

"You look happy, Maya," Sarah said softly, nudging my shoulder as I watched the children play.

I looked across the room. Sebastian was sitting on the floor in his expensive dress pants, letting Ivy put plastic pink princess barrettes into his dark hair while Noah handed him plastic tea cups. He looked completely absurd—and completely, wildly happy.

"I am," I whispered, a tear of genuine gratitude slipping down my cheek. "For the first time in four years, Sarah... I feel like I can breathe."

Sebastian caught my eye from across the room. He whispered something to Ivy, who giggled and ran off to join her brothers.

He stood up, brushing off his knees, and walked over to where I was standing by the glass window looking out over Central Park.

"A penny for your thoughts, Mrs. Vale?" he asked softly, reaching out to wrap his arms gently around my waist from behind, pulling me back against his broad, warm chest.

I didn't pull away. I rested my head back against his shoulder, watching the snow gently fall over the green canopy of the park far below.

"I was just thinking about four years ago," I admitted softly. "How terrified I was in that small hospital room in Queens... thinking I was all alone in the world."

May you like

Sebastian tightened his grip around me, burying his face into the nape of my neck, his breath warm against my skin.

"You will never be alone again, Maya," he whispered fiercely. "I swear to you on my life, on my soul... as long as I draw breath, no one will ever hurt you or our children again."
