Chapter 1 - The Midnight Departure

The silence in the penthouse stretched so long it felt physical.

Mara looked at Carmine—at the set of his shoulders, the impenetrable mask of a man who viewed his entire existence as a war zone. When he said time, she realized the devastating truth: he wasn't stalling. He was calculating losses. In his world, calculating losses meant deciding what—or who—got sacrificed to buy survival.

"You don't have time," Mara said softly, her voice dropping the tremor it had held a moment before. "And neither do I."

Carmine’s gaze snapped back to her. "What is that supposed to mean?"

"It means you think you can control this. You think you can give me an order, turn your back to the skyline, and wash your hands of it. But I'm not one of your lieutenants, Carmine. I'm not a loose end to be tied up or tucked away in a clinic with a signed check."

He closed the distance between them in two strides, his hand shooting out to grip the marble edge beside her hip, caging her in. His breath was warm against her temple, but his eyes were glacial.

"Listen to me very carefully," he whispered, his voice dangerously low. "Every enemy I have—the federal task force, the Chicago outfit, the younger bloods inside my own family waiting for me to slip—are looking for a lever. A soft spot. If they find out there is a woman carrying my child, they won't just come for you. They will carve you open to send me a message. You think I’m cruel? You have no idea what monsters are waiting for me to show a weakness."

May you like

"And you think forcing me to destroy a part of myself won't break me?" Mara looked straight into his dark eyes, refusing to flinch. "If I do what you want, Carmine, there will be nothing left of us anyway. The man I love died tonight."

She slid out from beneath his arm, grabbed her coat from the back of the stool, and walked toward the private elevator. He didn't stop her. As the heavy steel doors slid shut between them, she saw him standing alone in the center of that vast, freezing kitchen—a king ruling over an empty fortress.
