Chapter 10 - The Horizon We Built

Five years after the park reunion, the Solano house was filled with the kind of noise Carmine had once considered a liability, but now recognized as the only true wealth worth having.
Leo, now ten, was arguing loudly with Clara about who got to feed the golden retriever, while the smell of pancakes drifted from the kitchen.
Mara stood on the wraparound porch, a cup of tea in hand, watching the morning sun break over the ocean horizon, turning the water into molten gold.
Footsteps sounded behind her. Strong arms wrapped around her waist, pulling her back against a familiar, solid chest. Carmine pressed a kiss to the top of her head.
"You're up early," he murmured.
"I wanted to watch the sunrise," she smiled, leaning back into his embrace. "It looks different here than it did in Manhattan."
"Everything does," Carmine agreed, looking out across the sparkling water and the sprawling, safe world they had built together from the wreckage of their past.
