Chapter 6 - The Confession and the Covenant

That evening, after the twins were safely asleep in the quiet, sunlit apartment Mara had made for them, Carmine sat at her kitchen table. The marble was warm wood here—ordinary, domestic, safe.

"I dismantled it," Carmine said quietly, staring into a mug of black coffee he hadn't touched.

"What?" Mara asked, leaning against the counter.

"The old life. Every dock, every warehouse, every corrupted ledger. Sal tried to come after me last year from inside witness protection. I let the federal prosecutors have him on a silver platter. I traded every remaining secret I had for a clean slate and a permanent pardon under federal cooperation." He looked up at her, his eyes burning with sincerity. "There is no shadow left, Mara. Solano Logistics is a shipping and freight company traded publicly on the exchange. My hands are clean."

"Why?" she asked, tears spilling over her lashes. "Why risk everything to walk away? You could have kept running it."

"Because the day you walked out of that penthouse, I realized I was building a kingdom out of ashes," he said, standing up and walking toward her, stopping just inches away. "I didn't want to be a king anymore. I wanted to be a man who belonged to someone. To you. And to them."

He reached out, his hand trembling slightly as his fingers brushed her cheek. It was the first time in five years she had felt his touch—warm, steady, and entirely free of fear.

"I was a coward, Mara. I was terrified of bringing innocence into my darkness. But you brought light into mine instead. Can you ever forgive me for what I said that night?"

May you like

Mara leaned into his palm, a shuddering breath escaping her lips. "I didn't have an abortion, Carmine. I couldn't. But I lived in fear every day that you would find us and take them into your war."

"There is no war left," he vowed, his voice fierce and absolute. "Only us."
