Chapter 8 - The Legal Binding

Two years after their reunion, on a bright September morning under a canopy of turning autumn leaves in their backyard, Carmine and Mara were married.

There were no mobsters in expensive suits, no federal agents watching from unmarked cars, and no hidden agendas. There were only thirty people: trusted friends from the coastal town, Mara's old colleagues from the art world, and two very excited flower girls and ring bearers who took their jobs with deadly serious mafia-like precision.

Leo wore a miniature charcoal suit that mirrored the one Carmine had worn the day they first met in the penthouse, while Clara wore a white dress covered in embroidered wildflowers.

When the justice of the peace asked Carmine for his vows, he didn't look at the small crowd. He looked straight into Mara’s eyes.

"I spent my whole life believing power was about control, about holding a gun so nobody could ever hurt you," Carmine said, his voice ringing clear across the lawn. "I was wrong. True power is standing here today, giving you every piece of my heart, knowing you hold the only weapon that could ever bring me to my knees—and trusting you with it completely."

Mara smiled, a tear slipping down her cheek as she slid a simple platinum band onto his finger. "And I promise to remind you every single day that you are more than the shadows you came from."

When he kissed her, the applause from the small gathering erupted like a cheer of victory—not a victory of conquest, but a victory of survival, redemption, and enduring love.
