Chapter 1 - The Ring on the Marble

The silence inside the high-end bridal boutique was heavier than the heavy silk draped over Clara’s shoulders.
Dominic didn't step forward to apologize. He didn't rush to offer an excuse. He simply stood there with his hands in the pockets of his custom Italian suit, his eyes darting toward the seamstresses who had frozen in the corner like deer caught in headlights.
Chloe, on the other hand, smoothed down her tight red dress, her eyes flashing with a mixture of superficial panic and triumphant arrogance.
"Clara," Chloe began, her voice dropping into a performative, theatrical quiver. "It’s not what it looks like. Dominic was just overwhelmed with the wedding arrangements. He was under so much stress—"
"Shut up, Chloe," Clara said.
Her voice didn't shake. It was devoid of tears, devoid of anger, flat and precise like the blade of a surgical scalpel.
Clara reached down with her right hand, catching the edge of the six-carat platinum diamond band. The skin of her finger was slightly swollen from the tight fit of the corset, but she pulled the ring off with deliberate, unhurried force.
Dominic’s gray eyes narrowed as he watched her. "Clara, don't be dramatic. We have three hundred guests arriving on Saturday. My father and your uncle have already signed the preliminary harbor trade agreements."
"The trade agreements were contingent on my consent, Dominic," Clara said softly, stepping forward until she stood two feet away from him.
"You need this marriage as much as I do," Dominic hissed, stepping closer so the seamstresses couldn't hear his low, dangerous tone. "Without the Rossi family backing your shipping terminals, your uncle's board will vote you out by the end of the quarter. They think a woman—especially a woman who looks like you—can't manage the docks."
He looked her up and down, his gaze lingering on the heavy curves of her hips and the ivory silk bunching around her waist.
"I offered you respect, Clara," Dominic added, his lips curling into a condescending, cold smile. "I offered you a life where you never had to worry about being lonely. Don't throw away a empire because your feelings got hurt."
Clara looked at the man she had almost trusted with her future. She looked at Chloe, who was subtly wiping Dominic's lipstick from her chin with a manicured fingernail.
Clara held out her hand, palm up.
The six-carat diamond sat in her palm.
Clink.
She dropped the ring onto the polished marble floor at Dominic’s feet. It bounced once, rolling until it knocked against the tip of his leather shoe.
"You didn't offer me respect, Dominic," Clara said, her voice echoing off the mirrored walls of the boutique. "You offered me a cage. And as for my shipping routes... you'll find out tomorrow morning that I transferred seventy percent of the harbor land deeds into my personal trust three hours ago."
Dominic’s face turned white. "You did what?"
"Get out of my fitting room," Clara said, stepping past him toward the changing area. "And take your mistress with you."
"Clara, wait!" Chloe snapped, her voice losing its innocent tone. "You can't just ruin the Rossi alliance over a conversation! Do you know what your uncle will do to you?"
May you like
Clara pulled the heavy velvet curtain shut, severing the space between them.
"My uncle," Clara whispered to herself in the mirror as the seamstresses hurried forward to unpin her dress, "is about to learn that he backed the wrong Rossi."
