Chapter 2 - The Don in the Shadows

By midnight, Chicago was buried beneath a thick blanket of freezing November rain.

Clara sat inside her top-floor office at the Lake Michigan Shipping Operations center. The glass windows overlooked the dark expanse of the harbor, where giant red cranes stood like iron skeletons against the stormy sky.

Her laptop screen glowed with frantic messages from her uncle, Arthur Blake.

“Where are you?” “Dominic called me. What did you do at the bridal shop?!” “The Rossi syndicate is threatening to shut down our southern docks!”

Clara closed the laptop lid with a soft snap.

She reached into her handbag and pulled out an old black leather ledger. It had belonged to her father before he died five years ago, leaving her forty percent of the family’s maritime infrastructure.

Inside the front cover was a single phone number written in gold ink alongside a seal featuring a coiled silver viper.

The Valenti Syndicate.

If the Rossi family ran the political bribery and street-level extortion in Chicago, Lorenzo Valenti ran everything else. He was known in the underworld as Il Corvo—The Raven. A man in his mid-thirties who had taken control of the Valenti crime family after his elder brother was assassinated three years ago.

Lorenzo Valenti didn't attend charity galas. He didn't give interviews. He operated from a fortress in the North Side, controlling international logistics, automated freight lines, and federal judge appointments.

And three years ago, at her father's funeral, Lorenzo Valenti had walked up to Clara in the rain, handed her a black silk handkerchief, and whispered five words she had never forgotten:

“When they suffocate you, call.”

Clara picked up her office phone, dialed the number on the golden seal, and waited.

It rang twice.

"Speak," a deep, raspy voice commanded through the speaker.

"My name is Clara Blake," she said, leaning back against her leather chair, her fingers tracing the edge of her father's ledger. "I have ninety million dollars' worth of harbor land deeds, total control of the deep-water shipping lanes on Lake Michigan, and a broken engagement with Dominic Rossi."

There was a five-second silence on the line. Then, the low, velvety sound of a man chuckling echoed through the receiver.

"Dominic Rossi was always a fool who couldn't recognize priceless art if it stepped on his face," Lorenzo Valenti said softly. "Where are you, Clara?"

"My office at the docks."

"Stay there," Lorenzo commanded, the humor vanishing from his tone, replaced by an absolute authority that sent a shiver down her spine. "My cars will be at your doors in six minutes."
